Mary Alice's Story
Life
I have a very quiet life.
I started working in 1964, met my husband-to-be in 1972. George and I were married in 1974, we are still happily married.
We got a cabin/cottage in Forest County in 1996, we love to go there whenever we can.
I retired in 2000, and George retired in 2004.
We are both enjoying retirement.
Update: George and I moved to an independent retirement living community in October 2012, and George passed away in March 2013. I will continue to live here, it is a good place for me right now.
School
The boy I had the biggest crush on went to another school. I never saw him again. I was too shy to let him know.
The teacher who helped me most was my 9th grade algebra teacher. She gave me extra tutoring after school to be sure I understood the subject. I will always appreciate that.
I went to Mt. Oliver School for kindergarten, then to St. Canice's grade school for first through part of seventh grade. My family lived in Mt. Oliver for those years. College
I didn't officially "go to college."
I took several self-study courses for work that were college level.
I took a course for "computer competency" at CCAC.
I took, and passed, the Insurance Institute of America's exam in their Introduction to Claims course.
Workplace
I worked for Zurich Insurance Company for 35 years. Started as a general office clerk, moved up to stenographer, then claims clerk, then claims assistant. The first 20+ years were in their Boiler and Machinery Dept., then nearly 15 years in their Claim Dept. Was downsized from there in 1999 along with 11 other people. Went to work for Crum & Forster Insurance right after that, as a claim assistant. I worked there for a year, and called it a career in 2000. I am happily retired now.
Military
No military service/experience of my own.
My Dad served in the South Pacific in World War II, my brother served in Vietnam, my husband served in Germany during the Vietnam era, and my nephew and his wife have served in the most recent Iraq war. I am extremely proud of all of them.
