Mary Ann's Story

Life Well, "Beets" grew up and is now known by many as "Mabs" or "Mabsey". I am single and own a condo in Salem, MA in the historic district. Salem is fun, but the commute to work in Somerville, MA can be a pain. I am a school counselor at the neighborhood school behind the Mystic projects off Rte.93. Though it gets crazy, working 180 days a year leaves me lots of free time to explore interests and have fun. School experience for the "cherubs" is much different than what we experienced in Winchester-for better or worse. The schedule gives me a break from working in courts, blah, blah. I have a Maine Coon cat named "Whiskers" and of course, he's the son I did not have. I am fortunate to have good health, a wonderful brother and sister in law and 3 grown nephews who I see regularly. My mom is still in Winchester so I get to stop by the town we grew up in. Some pretty good memories. My dad, "Officer Beaton" lost a very courageous battle to lung cancer a year ago. I have to say that taking care of him was a priviledge and we had some good chuckles to the end-he was a great patient and remembered alot of you fondly. Life is good, though like for everyone quite challenging at times!!! I look forward to seeing the old "peeps" in November. Later!!!!! School what I remember alot of was going from St.Mary's to McCall Jr. High but once I got there I really loved it. Then going into the High School-especially it being a new building was awesome. If people don't remember MY biggest crush-oh, could I have been more obvious? HOW EMBARRASSING!! Any who, I would have to say that the two Mr.Kelly's-Math and History were my favorites. The teacher I liked least was Miss Mirka-she taught Math and i...Expand for more
t was torture. Hanging out by the Art room and having 0pen campus was fun. Being a cheerleader was fun though as an adult I don't admit it to too may people...SSHH!!!! I remember being at dances and having my dad do the detail and the time he had a squirt gun and kept it under his arm and squirting boys that were trying to make out with the girls. Also, the night, he caught me hanging out by the bridge waiting to see where the party was and he whistled for me to get in the unmarked car. I embarassingly remember him telling my prom date to call the house the next day to see if I could still go. Of course I did!! Oh the joys of having your father be the juvenile officer in the town you grow up in. All in all-some funny times. Workplace Looking back, I wish I had chosen a profession that was more lucrative. Starting out in human services, I always had to waitress part-time, and it's alot of work. Otherwise, I've worked for the Department of Youth Services with little delinquents, Brigham and Women's Hospital as emergency room social worker (where the little delinquents would end up after a gun shot wound), DYS group homes where I've had the lovely and unique experience of being spit at, bit and yes....girls ARE more difficult than boys. HA HA I've also worked at different community mental health agencies specializing in substance abuse and children and families. My work currently in the Somerville School system (for last 6 years) is intense, but fun and the schedule is the BEST!!!! If one is going to do this type of human service work, I think the school setting is the easiest to live with-no handcuffing kids-but I did get bit by a kindergartener no less!!! Gotta love the "ankle biters"!!!!!!!!!
