Mary Anne's Story

I am still in music. Retired from teaching public school music and still playing in church music, playing 3 masses a weekend. Divorced, 3 kids, 7 grandchildren and great friends. I'd especially like to know what happened to Boogie Rogers, Byron Kissane and Linda Smith. My interests are reading, socializing with friends, playing with my grandson, visiting my son and his wife in Beaufort, swimming, playing the piano and gourmet cooking & dining. I taught for five years in the Catholic school system and 17 in the public system in Charleston(North Charleston, actually).I really enjoyed teaching at one of the toughest schools in the district-Brentwood Middle School-until our terrific principal got taken away and it all went downhill at that school. After being personally assaulted four times and stalked for a year by a student, I transferred to our old Alma Mater,NCHS,and finished out my teaching career. I went out on disability because the damage had already been done from too much time at Brentwood!I do have to say though, that for all the tough times at Brentwood, there were some wonderful kids and great successes. One of my former "bad boys" that I leaned on pretty hard(to hear him tell it)is now a music teacher and soon to be presented to the public as the new Director of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra's Gospel Ensemble Choir. His name is Nathan Nelson and I am soooo proud of him. Anyone who lives in Charleston, look for his "Coming out Concert" in early February! Things are great now and I am enjoying retirement in my new condo in West Ashley. My oldest son,Charles, and his wife,Phylis and son(Noah) live about 4 miles from me and I see them often. My youngest son,Blair and his wife,Blakely, live in Beaufort. They visit me or vice/versa frequently. My daughter,Erika, and her husband,P.J., and five children; Luis, Connor, Kobe, Isabella, & Sofia live in Texas. I taught last year and this year until December at the school attached to my church-St. John's Catholic Church. I only taught music one day a week. It was very rewarding as the school specializes in special needs children grades k4&5- 8th grade. Challenging, but very rewarding. The kids were great;their problems ranging from ocd, autism to schizophrenia & other severe psychological problems.Anyway, I'm retired again for health reasons. I am still teaching private piano and voice lessons in my home. So I'm still kickin'. Hope to hear from some of you. Mary Anne I hope that friends remember me as a kind and caring person. I blow off steam by playing the piano-REALLY LOUD! The wildest thing I ever did in school;I'll NEVER tell! My hero-Lucianno Pavarotti, his magnificent, God given voice. My inspiration comes from my Faith and my friends, children and grandchildren. Also, the accomplishments of my former students! I always wanted to be a Opera Singer when I grew ...Expand for more
up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong-too shy and stage fright. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Boogie Rodgers, because we were such good friends!. My biggest surprise in life was that I got divorced-not the man I thought he was! No one in my family had ever been divorced-it just was not a concept I could get my mind around but you know-stuff happens like alcoholism and abusiveness. My obsessions are buying things for my kids and grand kids; also HOOKED on SCI/FI and BBC. I also read about a book a day! If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the bathroom and add on a individual indoor resistance swimming pool. My dream home would be on the beach!. I've learned that children are a blessing from God, but they can also break your heart like no-one else. Love must be unconditional no matter what! The old saying "When they are little they step on your toes and when they are big they step on your heart!" is sooooo true. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10 million of it to Church, then spend the rest on Children, Grandchildren and bills!. To be truly happy-well, I would be in NYC, watching every Broadway musical I could with my cousin Paulette. BUT- to be truly happy everything would have to be good with all of my children. My current age is 60. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be most likely dead. I was so completely stupid!. My best friend would tell you I'm unselfish and generous, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as somewhat detached, but a survivor/strong. My first crush is a doctor now, happily married with two grown children. Weirdest job-oyster shucker at a seafood restaurant.SUCH FUN-NOT! I share my home with my dog Ginger, which I find peaceful. My big victories involve kids, of course!Teacher of the Year-twice and Channel 5 Hall of Fame (nominated by my students). My one big Do-over? I would like to have been not so naive about how deceitful people you love can be. In 10 years, I hope to be alive. I'm going to get there by improving my health and physical strength. My first job was at Danny Jones Pool, where I got paid much lower than minimum wage to lifeguard and teach swimming. What I remember most about it is how much fun we (the guards) had all the time(specially after closing at night) and how free I felt. My oldest friend is my cousin Paulette. We met practically at birth-our mothers were sisters and they could have been twins they were so alike and close. We have always been on the same "wavelength" I guess you could say. We think, look and act alike (just like our mothers did!)and we can share our deepest, darkest and happiest moments and memories. I can't share my most memorable childhood memory--too painful! But, God is good and merciful, so I came through a survivor.
