Mary's Story

My current age is 52. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old. I was so completely wrong. My best friend would tell you I'm independent, serene, confident, secure, kind, positive, generous, funny compassionate, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as kind helpful, inclusive to all . The teacher I would most want to see and have contact with is my sixth grade teacher named Mr Lock B Locklear. This wonderful man inspired , motivated, chided, encouraged us all to think live and be the best we could . He treated like adults in every way and pushed us to dream and complete what our minds had dreamed of through art wood working, stain glass art, painting, metal work what ever our joy was , once a week if we had finished the work for the day . we had Mexican party days, Indian culture days, what ever it took to cement the history we were learning at the time .Our books became alive our dreams became reality for those of us who dared to live them .Current events were standard, learning tools at the start of the day. Opinions were backed up by facts. We were taught how to develop as adults and to stand up for ourselves in any situation . What a brilliant concept for teaching and to be able experience this as a student . It was a joy to be at school never knowing what you learn and experience that day . he was and still is an amazing man .. I loved the stories of his childhood where he made mistakes just like us <grin> . I have never forgot him and wish that more teachers could have been more like him . In 10 years, I hope to be a RN with a masters degree,my beloved Callan and I will be living in Ireland and working side by side in the CARDIOTHORCIC OR. Giving people a new chance at life once more . We hope to be raising children in our spare time and once a year traveling around the world donating our life skills to others who would not have a chance to have surgery otherwise . . I'm going to get there by finishing my degree while I'm waiting for my Callan to come home from Iraq . Callan has been there since 2003 with the UK army . My beloved is doing wonderful work while there but misses little things we here at home take for granted . like fresh air without ...Expand for more
sand in your mouth cool breezes not trying to piece together innocent bombing victims and fellow coalition soldiers daily .Also big on his list is to have the freedom to be able to call and be with loved ones at will .Our love is eternal and unbroken, corny as hell but true . Both of us never thought the situation would last this long but one day we will be together again . Taking a walk on the beach on the coast in California where I live now is one of my fav pastimes. Inhaling the salty air and being brushed by the sea breezes as my long haired wiener dog romps and plays is more fun than I have ever dreamed possible !!!THINK ABOUT PICKING UP A WEE PUP TO ENJOY LIFE WITH. Your laugh lines will thank you for it grin .To see life from their point of view is awesome and humbling to say the least.... Recently one of my biggest surprises came from work.It was at an employee awards luncheon that I was one of the nurses of the year for 2008.I had just started in hospice nursing less than a year in Jan of 2008 . I truly love my profession and love my patients and families I take care of . This award is such an honor to have your fellow co workers nominate you and vote for you . I am a person who is rarely speechless in any situation but on that day I could not even squeak out a word ... tears still come to my eyes and when I look at the beautiful plaque with my name spelled right.<SMILE> I still get chills !!! To be frank I was just doing what I love best. It never seems like a job at all!!! . MY NURSING COWORKERS ARE LIKE A FAMILY WE TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER.... NONE OF THE COMMON BACKSTABBING EVER REARS IT'S UGLY HEAD. KINDNESS AND LOVING COMPASSION STARTS FROM THE TOP AND FLOWS DOWNWARD TO ONE AND ALL. AMAZING TO FIND IT IN THESE TIMES.WE ARE A TRUE TEAM EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY. I thank the lord every day I wake up and travel to my clients homes, alfs, long term care, and so on .Helping, my families deal with their loved ones impending demise in all stages and being there at the very moment of passing. it is truly an honor to be with these courageous families and patients. What can I say, it is so humbling and rewarding. To me it is a calling not a job.MAY ALL OF YOU BE SO HAPPY IN YOUR LIVES...
