Mary's Story

Current home is in Richmond, Virginia. After St. Mary's High School, went to State University of New York at Farmingdale (Animal science) - skills learned: cow milking, cow tipping, tractor operation and maintenance! That somehow led to working with much smaller lab animals in semi-basic research at Avon, then back to cows again at Kansas State, working around getting married and honeymooning on the Chisholm Trail, of all places. Off to South Carolina, again in a lab, this time with even smaller critters - microbes. There I had our daughter, fished in the Little Pee Dee (love that name), made elderberry wine in the lab, went shrimping in the creek at Murrell's Inlet. But then, off to Alaska - could ice skate in the basement when the pipes broke in Fairbanks, and the car engine froze on the way to pick up my spouse at the airport, but there was really great stuff beside that! Then down to Anchorage - which was beautiful. Lots...Expand for more
of hikes, lots of cross country skiing - very cross country. Lots of critters in the yard. Large critters, moose size critters, as we lived in the hills heading up the mountains. Flying down to Homer in a very small plane was super. Worked at the hospital - our pathologist was an opera singing musher - such fun. But back to the Lower 48 and on to Arkansas - it's really a beautiful state - camping on one particular river was quite exciting when approached by a guy with a shotgun, in overalls with a pistol belt on, and a dime store sherrif's badge - protecting us from the guys who were growing pot along the river... Got back in to research at the university, this time with slime mold. Amazing little things. Next on to Virginia, and a degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (Biology). More research lab work at MCV, at the McGuire VA hospital, and finally retired as the Biology Lab Manager from the University of Richmond.
