Mary Beth's Story

After graduating from Kenston High School in 1979 I worked at a few lowly jobs here and there. Then I decided I really needed to do something with my life. I applied to Marymount School of Practical Nursing but was turned down! I couldn't believe it. I spoke with the "Sister Superior. She told me, "Have you ever worked with sick people before?" which I hadn't so I volunteered at Geauga Community Hospital two days a week for eight hours a day(my two days off). I also worked full-time at E-Z shop across from the old drive-in. I worked from 7am to 3pm. Then I went to (get this) the Cleveland School of Ballet and trained under Dennis Nahat. Wow, how out of character was that for me? I loved it. I then got fired from E-Z shop for buying beer on Sunday which was a blessing because I then went to Medical Assisting School in Ravenna for a whole year. I worked for a doc in Beachwood, a gastroenetrologist. I shopped at Beachwood Mall everyday. I thought I was real cool. Then everything went haywire. I don't know why but I was always in love with this guy that I met on Spring Break in 1978 in Florida. His name was Jim. He lived in Florida. I had not seen him since 1979. A bunch of friends and I were going to Ft.Lauderdale so I called his mom's house and she gave him the message. In the meantime our house burned down on the inside. The house we lived in on Washington Street. That happened on May 13, 1983. The same year my brother, Tom Alston graduated from Kenston. We lived in a double-wide trailer on the property until the house was completed. I hated that. So when "Jim from Florida" called I met him in Pittsburgh f...Expand for more
or the weekend and the rest was history. I never left his side until he passed away in October of 1997. That sucked really bad. We have three fabulous children together. James 24 lives in Sarasota, Florida, Christina 23 lives at home, and Bob 22 lives at home. Prior to his decline in health I enrolled in nursing school and I became a RN. I had no idea I was that smart. I could never pass Algebra with Mr. Fenstamaker. I tried twice and failed both times but in school I passed in with a B. Not Bad. It must have been Fenstamaker. I remember he signed a lavatory pass for me that said, "Beth ALL STONED " what the hell? I didn't even like weed that much. I didn't smoke my senior year. Made me feel stupid. So I have been a RN for 16 years now. I worked mainly Intensive Care. I took care of Nancy Liswoski's mom. My first husband died then I met this narcotics detective. I knew him for 6 months before I would even go out on a date with him. I ended up married to a civil servant, a cop no less. We have two daughters ages 8 and 9. They are beautiful, Brooke and Katie. I have lived in New Jersey, Florida, PA, New York, and Ohio. I am still great friends with my brother, Howard. He is still crazy as ever like the time we went to Kent, smoked weed, got drunk, and drove the wrong way and a one way street. I love him. I don't speak to Debbie Gill anymore. She turned out to be a real piece of work and that is all I will say about that. I live in Chardon and I think it is so cool to talk to people from back in the day. I guess I turned out all right. I look forward to talking to everyone. Please email me. Love, Beth Alston
