Mary's Story

Life Updated 6/8/10: Almost a year gone by and my main activity has been growing my hair long again after 30 years of layers, curling iron, gel and hairspray. Ah, it's great to be natural! Updated 7/6/09: Another little scion of the Canavan family has arrived. Waylon Patrick Canavan was born on July 15th in Modesto, CA to my nephew Kevin and his girlfriend Tiffany. He is mainly noted so far for being the younger brother of Jaedyn Canavan, who was born Dec. 29th, 2006. "That's my brother!" she is reported to inform everyone within earshot. I don't have much to report about my activities since my Mom died. It's been a difficult time because I was totally worn out from the six years of caregiving (which I was so grateful to be able to do). Bereavement does not pass quickly but my friends are keeping me from becoming a total hermit. Last summer I visited my family in Modesto, CA and some old DC friends in Spokane, WA. I'll be going out to Modesto again sometime this Fall to meet Waylon. Why that name? All I can tell you is they live in California, man! Updated 12/12/07:...Expand for more
I'm sad to announce that my mother Catherine Canavan passed away on November 23, 2007 at age 87. She was a good lady and a proud native of Texas. Updated 3/6/06: Mom is still with me and at 85 she is doing quite well despite the Alzheimer's disease. We lost my brother's daughter Meghan last summer at age 29. It's a blow that will be difficult to recover from. Updated June 2003: Jim passed away on June 22, 2003. He will be missed by family and many friends. Added 5/6/03: My brother Jim Canavan is Yorktown Class of 1964 and lives in California. Unfortunately, he is very ill at this time.If you'd like to contact him, just drop me an e-mail. I stayed in Northern Virginia until 1990, working in the computer software development biz. I was so burned out by then with the stress, long hours and traffic, that I ditched it all and moved to a slower-paced area. I'm still working as a software test specialist, now I work for the Children's Services department of my State. My 82-year-old mother has Alzheimer's and has moved in with me - being a caregiver is a whole new trip.
