Mary Elaine's Story

I graduated from Incarnate Word Academy (Corpus Christi TX) in 1965 but I also attended schools in Jacksonville, FL where I had to change schools often due to the development of the area where we lived. I attended Nathan B. Forrest Jr. Sr. High School as a seventh grader and then went on to Sacred Heart School as an eighth grader. From the back porch of that classroom I witnessed with my class the first astronaut enter space for the first time (Shepard). I then attended Jefferson Davis Junior High when it first opened when I was in the ninth grade, I returned and attended Nathan B. Forrest Senior High School the first semester of grade 10 when my dad was transfered back to Texas. I loved each one of these schools and remember so many of my classmates with great affection. It was very hard for me to leave my friends in Jacksonville though many of them were Navy kids and would also move on to other places. I wish I could get in touch with everyone. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see the Nathan B. Forrest Yearbook of 1964-1965 to see my class as well as the teachers who taught me. I got my BA from Our Lady of the Lake University San Antonio in Interdisciplinary Studies and my MA in mid-management from Texas A & M Corpus Christi TX. I was initially a classroom teacher but then went into administration. I loved being in education for each of those 35 years! I was fortunate to have found my niche as I always felt called to teach. I am happily married and am an adjunct professor at our local university where I supervise student teachers. I also do parttime consulting work with low-performing schools and assist a private school in another city. My volunteer work is with Christus Spohn Hospice and "Toys for Tots." After my mother's death I felt called to do hospice work and help families deal with death and dying issues. I always like to say that I was the wallflower in school but ended up marrying a football star from Carroll High School (class of '65). No longer do I stand at the dances hoping that someone will ask me to dance. I now have the greatest dance partner for life. For sure, I was a late bloomer. It was all worth the wait as I married in my early 30's...after being a nun for 14 years...I guess I should have mentioned that at the top. Yes, I enjoyed being a nun (Sister Elaine) and left the convent with wonderful memories and great friendships which I still have today. It was in the convent that I taught students at Christ the King (grades 3 and 5), Incarnate Word Middle School (taught 7th and 8th grade Literature and religion), Incarnate Word Elementary where I was the schoo...Expand for more
l principal, Cathedral School in grade 5. All the above schools were in Corpus Christi. In Laredo, I taught at Blessed Sacrament School (grades 2 and 5). In Brownsville, I taught at Villa Maria Junior High where I taught Literature and Religion to seventh and eighth graders. I loved being a teacher and have fond memories of many of my students. I hope they all turned out to be happy and great people...and hopefully my teaching techniques didn't ruin them! I know I had great fun teaching them. After the convent, I taught at Oak Park Elementary (grades 4 and 6) and then became an elementary assistant principal at Club Estates, Crossley Special Emphasis School, and Menger Elementary. At age 45 I became a school principal at Montclair Elementary, Garcia Elementary and Carroll Lane Elementary all in the CCISD until I retired after 35 years in education. My interests include reading and traveling with my husband to interesting and fun places. White water rafting is an interest we recently aquired which moved me out of my comfort zone! We enjoy live concerts and visiting museums. I have a minor in art so I enjoy art museums and have had the opportunity to see major works of art in this country and in Europe. There is nothing in my life that I would change. I hope that I have followed God's plan and feel there is still so much more that I want to do and enjoy in life. So I try to listen to Him. "Retirement" does not mean taking it easy for me but rather another opportunity to do something I didn't do the first go-round or try to do it right the second time. Seeking God and growing in grace is a daily jouney for me. I know all too well of His loving mercy in my life and am humbled by His unconditional love for me. I was lucky to have great parents who supported all of my achievements and who gave me courage when things got tough because life was not always a piece of cake for me. They have both passed on. They taught me many lessons in life while I grew up but at the end of their life they taught me how to be ready to face death bravely and continue the journey back to God. I am looking for Susan Wallace (or her sister Faye), Patricia Gartman, and Janice Clark (Forrest HS); Patricia McGuire, Gail Stubbs, and Pam Dillingham (Sacred Heart School; Charles Jefferies,Johnny Smith (journalism pal), and Steve Williams (Jefferson Davis Junior High) all schools in Jacksonville, FL. Most were Navy families so some might have moved elsewhere. I understand that Sacred Heart Church and School, Jacksonville FL will celebrate their Jubilee in 2009. I am hoping that I can reconnect with my eighth grade classmates.
