Mary's Story
I graduated in 1950 and moved to Virginia that summer to live with my mother. I entered Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, in the fall. After one year at MWC i left to get a job at the Pentagon. I worked for the Air Force in the IDept. of Legislative Liaison, dealing with Congress on AF matters. I loved my job and being where so much was going on. It was during the Korean War and an exciting time. My roommate and I volunteered as hostesses at the USO and we were part of a troupe that went around to bases and hospitals in the area to perform.
I loved living in that beautiful city and enjoying all the cultural events available: seeing the Army Band play on the Capitol steps on Sunday afternoons and the AF Band & Singing Sergeants perform on the Lincoln barge. In the winter, concerts took place in Constitution Hall. I saw Eddie Fisher perform there during his brief stint in the Army. Debbie Reynolds came to visit him there and that is w...Expand for more
hen they got engaged.
After five years of single life, I married in 1956 to an Irishman from Philadelphia. We lived in Maryland and raised six children. In Jan of 1969 my children and I came back Laurel, arriving just before the train explosion. I worked at Masonite until Nov of 1974 and then took a government job with the Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg where I stayed until I retired in 1994. I got involved in Little Theater while in Vicksburg and really loved it.
I later spent a year in Montana where my daughter was living; then came back and married John Davis, a longtime beau. We live in Monroe, LA, and run a fruit stand here. We will probably be retiring soon and haven't decided what to do next. I hope to move bck to Mississippi. I have a daughter in Ocean Springs and I want to go there but my husband thinks NELA is the place for him so don't know how it will turn out.
We'll see what comes next.
