Mary's Story
Life
Where do I start, 26 years is a long time to catch up on. Some of you may recall that I was engaged to a submarine sailor and planned to be married in 1981. Well, unfortunately, after serving six years on a nuclear submarine, he developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma and died when he was 24. I was devastated. I went to live in southern California to be with my mom and aunt, and ended up staying there for 21 years... Somewhere along the line I became a certified nurse assistant and absolutely loved it, but wanted to do more. So I knuckled down and worked full-time and went to school part-time and became a registered nurse. Not long before graduation from College of the Desert with my Associate in Science degree, my mom suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, and died a week later...that was only about a year ago. ...Expand for more
In the time since my mom died, I became increasingly aware of the importance of spending time with the people who are important to you - much of my family is still here in the Fox River Valley area. Soooo, my brother, Bob, my man friend Mel and I live together here in Elgin. The three of us get along real well, we laugh a lot.
I just moved here three months ago, and finally got my Illinois nursing license. I am in the process of choosing a hospital for career opportunities. I am strongly considering continuing my education. It's funny, when I was in high school, all I wanted was out of school. Now that I have been to college, I want more!
I would love to hear from any of my classmates, and am especially interested to hear if anyone else went into healthcare. Please contact me through Classmates.com
