Mary's Story
Well, the South Shore will never be the same after Hurricane Sandy (2 weeks ago). Mario's Hi Hook (recently reopened as Tres Palm, is gone, as is the Beach House Adult Home. John Anthony's (currently know as Venetian Yacht Club) was damaged by both the water and then a fire. Quite a few village families are homeless at this time...some will be able to rebuild, some will not. I've met a couple of people who experienced the Hurricane of 1938 and they say this was much worse. FEMA people tell us that Sandy was worse than Katrina, which seems incredible to most residents I've talked to. Fortunately, we suffered a much lower number of deaths and injuries. Everywhere you look there are piles of debris, but I have to say the clean-up is well underway. The Village has done a wonderful job there, cleaning up the debris once it's curbside and even helping people clean up on occasion.
After teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) for 22+ years, I retired in 2008. . I was a Library Trustee for 25 years and a Village Trustee for 4 years (during which time Mayor Don Conroy died and Ralph Scordino became mayor!). I'm currently working more on historical Babylon and its preservation. I've become something of an expert on the Argyle Hotel, which was located on the west side of the lake fro...Expand for more
m 1882 until 1904.
I'm on the board of the newly formed Preservation Society, with the goal of preserving buildings 100 + years old. This started with saving (we hope) the old house at the southeast corner of Deer Park Avenue and Ketawamoke Ave. I've spent the last 32 years living in a saltbox on North Carll Ave (between O'Shea's and St. Joe's. The house has two apartments and the attached barn also has two. Clyde Cook lived here from the 50's until just before his death in the early 80's. I had just had a new roof put on the barn the week before the hurricane and the men are building a new chimney as I write this. This house was the Carll Homestead and was located on the site of the Highway Diner (now an oriental restaurant locally called the China Diner and may be the oldest house in the village (it was built in 1730). I love it and hate it (because it needs much more work than I can afford unless I win a big lottery prize).
I've been on crutches for the past 10years due to damage done by taking steroids so much as a child and adult, in treatment of my asthma.
Never married, no kids. Very active in the village all my adult life. (At one point I owned Sudder Bazaar for 5 years and still miss..
My mother passed away last year at age 96, 2 of my sisters live in Babylon, too.
