Mary Helen's Story

Life We have been living in Mansfield, Ohio since 1988. We moved here because of Ray's job when Doug (our oldest) was going to start high school and Brian was going into 3rd grade. Well, now Doug is 38 and married and Brian is 31 and is getting married Nov. 1 2008. We are grandparents to 3 little girls, Clare Marie (9) and Ana Therese (8) and Angelina Rose,(3), Doug's and Brian has a little Boy, Brendan (19 months) and expecting another little boy in early October. Both Doug and Brian are trumpet players just like mom & dad! Actually Doug pursued a music degree receiving the top trumpet scholarship for a freshman and graduated from Ohio State. He enjoys playing his horn and is working for Cardinal Health in Coumbus as Systems Engineer Team Leader. Doug played in a polka band while in college (Eddie Biegaj and Crusade) and made 3 recorings with the group. Brian went on to Pharmacy School and graduated from the University of Toledo and works for CVS in Wooster Ohio, living in Brunswick. He too enjoys playing his horn and took Doug's spot in Crusade for 3 years, making 2 recording with the group. The group played a lot out East so Ray & I did a lot of travelling to see them. Brian even got the chance to play on a cruise ship to the Caribbean with Crusade. Of course we followed them - Great fun!! Because of their other job responsibiities, they both had to give up playing full time with the group however they each fill in when necessary. That Polish blood continues to flow in their veins!!! Brian married Christine Yakir. Chrissy is the daughter of my best friend at CCHS, Susan Sulewski! We had kept in touch all these years, sharing in our kids special events. Chrissy & Brian knew each other but the distance was too great to develop any friendship. Her parents moved to the Mansfield are in 2007 as Chrissy was graduating from the University of Dayton. Of course we were again invited to her party and that's when the friendship/relationship began!!! Music was their common interest as her degree is in Music Therapy. They have so much in common. Who would have thought our kids would marry!!! Chrissy is a wonderful addition to the family. As a family, we accompany the choir at St Peter's Church here in Mansfield for the Christmas midnight Mass, for the Easter Liturgies and any special events that come to St. Peter's. Beside the 4 of us on trumpet, there are 2 trombonists, flutist, violinist and tympany. We can almost raise the roof with the great accoustics in the Church!! We love to travel and have been on 7 cruises, the last being June 2011 in the Western Mediterranean....Just gorgeous!!!! My brother, Dick Zunkiewicz joined us and we had a blast! Spring '05, we traveled to Poland to experience our heritage as my dad was born in Southern Poland and came to the US in 1923. We were there for 12 days - what an experience! The churches and castles are absolutely gorgeous, the people were very nice and the scenery through the countryside was beautiful. There is so much history there and we do plan to visit again in the very near future to visit Northern Poland where Ray's family is from. In Spring 2007 we traveled to Italy: Rome Venice, Capri, Florence, Milan and several smaller cities in between. In Sept 2008 we traveled for 16 days to Germany, Austria and Switzerland with an excursion to Hungary . This w...Expand for more
as my "dream trip" ever since studying German in Sr. Adolph's class at CCHS. The whole trip was amazing. One highlight was viewing the Matterhorn in Switzerland and going to an altitude of almost 13,000 ft. We felt like we were on top of the world!!! What a spectacular view. Workplace I worked for Crane Pumps & Systems as a Secretary in the Mansfield Sales office from 1997 till April 2007 when I learned my job was terminated as well as three other individuals in the office. Even though it was only part-time, I still managed to get in 30 - 32 hours/week. I have learned a lot through this job in working with Power Point and Excel. I have created numerous Power Point presentations for my boss that helped win the Company some very strong business partners. Our manufacturing plant which was formerly in Mansfield about 14 years ago is in Piqua, Ohio (in the Dayton area). The Sales office remained here. As times are today, consolidation is a concern and our office will most likely be moving all responsibilitities to Piqua by the end of this year. It is sad because a couple of people here have been with the company for 45-47 years. The company itself is 100+ years old! It was a shock to have been "let go" but I'm sure better opportunities await. After 1 year of "retirement" worked as a receptionist for the Richland County Convention & Visitors Bureau. I absolutely loved it; meeting and helping new people every day with information about Mansfield and its attractions especially the Ohio State Reformatory where "Shawshank Redemption" was filmed, Kingwood Center, and especially Mid Ohio Race Course where we have an information booth - We even went to the weekend races - Free!!!! What a bonus!! Well all of that came to an end Oct. 31 as the job was also terminated! The economy here is really bad and no one is hiring, or so I thought! Early in December I received a call from the Renaissance Theatre here in Mansfield that they were hiring and got my name from the Visitors Bureau that I was looking for a job. Well they were hiring as the theater is expanding and wondered if I would be interested! The theater is undergoing major renovation and needed additional help in the box office which is now in the brand new area. I accepted the offer and begin this new opportunity January, 2010. The theater is the home of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, Mansfield Youth Orchestra, Miss Ohio Pageant and live stage presentations, musicals and top name performers. The upcoming season is going to be very busy and exciting. I am looking forward to all of this! I also have been a Mary Kay Cosmetics Consultant for 30 years. There are no pink cadilacs in my driveway but I have met some really neat people, travelled to Dallas for Seminar and the discounts are great on my cosmetics! Ray is working for CVS. He has been a pharmacist since 1973. He's considered one of the "old timers" now!! He enjoys his job and really is not planning on retiring for several years. There is a definite need of Pharmacists and he can still work part time when he is ready. He has been a wonderful mentor for Brian and has a great team working with him at his store. After Brian graduated from U of T, and with having Doug complete his degree, Ray bought himself a well deserved gift of an Infinity M35X. It almost drives itself! He deserves it!!
