Mary's Story

July 2022 Some people will know me as Mary Kay Blatchford; others as Mary Brubacher. So, what’s in a name? When I married for the first time, in 1971, I decided to take my husband’s last name. Then, as a certain cosmetic company became well known, I simplified my first name to Mary. Sometime after a divorce, I married for the second time, but by then I did not want another name change. So, Mary Brubacher is who I am. I have lived in Regina since 1994 when I was head-hunted for a job here. I am now officially retired. As long as my two adult children both continue to live here, I too will continue to live here in Regina as well. This past June, I celebrated 45 years as an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada. While I have worked in a variety of settings, most of my career has been in healthcare chaplaincy, where I have been a combination of practitioner, administrator, educator, researcher, and writer. I now have a small consulting practice, working by word of mouth and referral. I don’t work much, but I would not want to be any busier. At this stage in my life, time is at a premium. I make every minute count, for with each passing day, there will be less time, until there is no more. Perhaps like some others at this stage of life, I am in the process of downsizing, de-cluttering, purging, organizing, giving away, donating, re-configuring, re-cycling, and re-purposing, to make room for something...Expand for more
new, whatever that might mean. It goes without saying that I love spending time with family, and I enjoy celebrating my inner child who loves to laugh and giggle and sing and dance and play with my 2 ½ year old granddaughter. I had saved too many books for reading in the leisure days of retirement; the books are now mostly gone as there were too many for one lifetime. With a plethora of photographs, I am embracing the adage that less is more. Antiques that I was going to refinish, are mostly gone. Knitting needles and yarns that my arthritic fingers will no longer use, gone. Family heirlooms and memorabilia and work product are well, not so much gone. Be it sufficient to say that I’m making hard decisions around what really needs to be kept. Should you google my name, though I don’t know why you would, please do not confuse me with other Mary Brubacher’s, as my name is very common, especially in Mennonite circles. I’m aware that my extensive work in the field of perinatal loss has led to my theology sometimes being misrepresented in the printed word. I find it curious that news reporters do in fact, knowingly or unknowingly, report false information, or perhaps lead their readers into false assumptions. If you do come across something about me, don’t take what you read at face value, that’s all. Mostly though, I believe I have moved into Google oblivion. Well, enough for a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Cheers!
