Mary's Story
School
School had it's bad and good aspects. Socially, I wasn't part of the in-crowds and didn't go to alot of the events at school. I wish now that I had done more of that. I was more of a bookworm. I loved working in the library at Central High School. My junior year was my favorite year. Everything seemed to click. I left Central at the end of my junior year. I wish I could have attended there as a senior. One of my memories from high school is attending Mrs. Atkin's biology class. One day we had to disect a frog. I didn't want to go to school at all - I am not an animal person - I did not want to touch a dead frog. I was so lucky that my partner was a boy and he was great. He did all the disecting - all I had to do was pin down the skin. That individual will always be my "hero."
College
After high school, I didn't go to college until I entered the Air Force. In the Air Force, I attended classes at night to earn my first Associates Degree in Data Processing. While in the military moving from state to state and country...Expand for more
to country, and being the parent to 3 children, it took awhile but I was finally able to finish my Bachelor's Degree in Information Management with emphasis in Business. One of the greatest thrills of my life was to walk down that aisle as magma sum lauda graduate.
Workplace
The first 8 years after high school, I was a wife and a stay at home mother. In 1978, I joined the Air Force. For the next 20 years I was a computer operator, systems monitor, Data Processing Center Supervisor, and Telecommunications Center Superintendent. After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, I went back to work as a contractor at a local Air Force base in Alabama. In that position I worked as a security specialist for Air Force programs. Currently, I work work for the Logistics community in the Air Force. We are building the first Logistics Vocabulary (it's actually an ontology)for the Air Force. It's been challenging and exciting at the same time. I enjoy my job and the people I have the opportunity to work with during my travels from base to base.
