Mary's Story

Life I grew up in Richmond, California and attended Richmond schools. One of my favorite teachers was Mrs. James at Nystom Elementary on So. 10th. There were four of us Landers kids and we had many memories of going to the Richmond Plunge, hanging out at the sugar docks or watching the motorcyles climb the hills at Pt. Richmond. I got married while still a teenager, divorced after having three wonderful children. I now have five grandchildren. We all still live in the Bay Area. I hardly ever return to Richmond to see the old hang outs. I remember cruising the drag for hours and the old Uptown Theater. My sister, Pat and I used to collect Pepsi bottles, cash them in for the refund at the Cosy Corner Liquor Store on Cutting to pay for our show tickets. I think the price of a ticket was only like 40 cents and we could hang out all day. Those were the days of great movies. Alvarado P...Expand for more
ark was also a really fun place. The Arlington Drive was a great place to see all the lights below. Pt. Richmond was a good place for kids just to look at the lights over in San Francisco or San Rafael. We used to go down there to watch the Richmond San Rafael Bridge being built. I think the ferries should have been left in service also. Kids today will never have the memories that we have of growing up in Richmond. I remember living in Pt. Richmond for a while, meeting my first boyfriend while living there. I often wonder where some of my old friends went, like Margie Byars, Virginia Hammon, Elsie Haglund. Does anyone out there know what happened to Jerry and Pansy Craig? Today I am retired and just as busy as when I was working. I just don't have a time clock to punch anymore. I take care of my youngest granddaughter when she isn't at school. I couldn't ask for anything more.
