Mary Ann's Story
After graduating from Iola High School in 1959, I went to Iola Junior College for two years before completing my degree in Art Education at Emporia State. Graduating in the middle of the year, in 1964, I was given my first teaching job at Salina High School. I was there for a year and a half before leaving to marry Harry Carter, whom I had met in Salina. He was in the service, but due to be released in 1965. We married in September and moved to Poughkeepsie, NY, where Harry obtained a job with IBM, a position he retained for 29 years, and I continued teaching art, but this time in an elementary school. After 7 years in New York and one child, with another on the way, we were able to be transfered to KC. Our daughter, Kristy was born here. d closer to my family, in 1982. I have lived in the Overland Park area every since. I subbed in the local school districts until obtaining a teaching job at Ray Marsh elementary,with the Shawnee Mission Schools, a position I was in for 18 years, before retiring in 2004.
My children have grown up in this area, married, and have children of their own. My son, Jeff, has 2 girls, Maddie,age 8, and Paris, age 6., My daughter,, Kristy, has a son, Jackson, age 2, and a baby daughter,Kendall, 5 months.
The past few years have not been good ones for my family. Our family has lost 3 members within the past 2 years. My mother, sister-in-law and husband have all passed away within that time. Harry was in poor health the past 2 years and died in the hospital in May 2012. I am presently adjusting to living without him, but am fortunate to have many family members around me, and am looking forward to living my life to the fullest.
