Mary's Story

How do you sum it all up?... Growing up, I loved animals. I had cats, dogs, fish, mice, hamsters... I always wanted to be a veterinarian. In reality though, I knew I didn't want to spend ten years(or more) in college. I had made plans to attend a college in Orlando for dental technology(my 2nd choice), but that all changed too. After graduation, I moved back to Michigan(my home state) where my dad and older siblings lived. I went to college in Traverse City and earned an AAS degree in Data Processing (of all things!). The future was in computers, and we thought this would be a great career choice. As it tuns out, I got a job at the bank where I did my internship. It wasn't as a programmer though, it was as a teller! Okay, I wasn't very driven! I enjoyed the next few years living in beautiful Traverse City on the shores of Lake Michigan, supporting myself at the bank. At 24, I met my future husband. Joel is a guitar player, singer, and a pilot. We were married within a year. He has a degree in Avionics Technology. His job as an avionics sales rep moved us out to Washington state in Jan. of '86. We started a family in 1987 with the birth of our son, Jordan. Two years after that, our daughter Kelsey was born, and three years later came our daug...Expand for more
hter, Alyssa. This was my career - motherhood - and I loved it! Fast forward twenty-one years... Our kids are doing great. Jordan is in his fourth year of college at Eastern WA University, studying government and pre-law. Kelsey graduated from high school in 2008 and is taking classes at one of the community colleges. She is my animal lover! She has been working at a veterinarian's office for two years now. Alyssa will be a junior in high school. She is involved in band, marching band(I was a Kiltie, and proud of it!), and loves hip-hop dance. Time really does fly, and nothing like kids to make that happen. We eventually ended up in the Spokane area. We love it here. It's a recreational paradise with four seasons. The mountains, lakes, and forests are all here. We enjoy our boat on Lake Coeur d'Alene and Priest Lake in the summer. Joel still works in the avionics industry. He is the director of Aerospace and Defense Sales now at his company. He sings in a band that plays at local venues. I do get to Florida occasionally, usually the Bradenton area. My father was in a nursing home there, but recently passed away. I keep in touch with my close friends, Denise and Nancy. I attended the 30-year reunion in Oct. of '08 and had a fantastic time.
