Mary's Story

Life After a very successful 30 year career, I was forced into early retirement after two unsuccessful back surgeries to repair a fracture in my spine (I broke my back in a fall Jan. 10, 1986). Fusions led to 5 additional herniated discs, thanks to the scoliosis that I am sure many that remember me from H.S. recall the brace I wore for a few years in hopes of correcting it...it did not. Yet, I go on...successful Mom (6 kids and 1 grandchild to date) and extensive business knowledge and continuing education, I continue forward. From someone that was not expected to walk after the age of 30, I still walk and continued working in corporate America for another 18 years against all odds: never give up. I have been called a walking miracle. In all my amazing computer career my most favorite job was my last, with American Media aka National Enquirer where I worked from 1994 to 2004. Despite my disability, I was readily hired for my mind and skills. These people are the most genuine, creative and friendly people I have ever met in my life. We all come from a wonderful mix of backgrounds, environments and cultures and, simply, have fun with life. To them, I credited my peace of mind, my place in this strange world and with learning to grow and care. Though I no longer work there, I ask anyone, the next time you pick up a STAR, NATONAL ENQUIRER, GLOBE, WEEKLY WORLD NEWS, etc. look beyond the sto...Expand for more
ry and wonder about those behind it. They are all the most remarkable people I have ever had the privelege to work with and proudly know. And now? I'm having fun. I take the experiences of life and am returning to my first loves, writing...living in the rural life (choose Kentucky) and enjoying my children... Workplace Currently, I no longer work (Jan. 2004). Prior... I worked for American Media, Inc. and had been for the past 9 years. I worked in the Circulation Department as the Statistician. The work involves heavy computer programming, report writing, sales analysis, etc. It was very rewarding. The company itself is like a family...from the writers, editors, photo, accounting, etc. Prior to this, I was the Novell Network Administrator for St. Mary's Hospital for 3 years and the PC Support Specialist for Rinker Materials for 7 years. And, of course, 10 years with Broad Data Systems in Toms River, NJ. Unfortunately, my computer field was "interrupted" when I broke my back. Two surgeries later, rods and screws, I can no longer handle the strain of lifting equipment. But, since I taught people how to use computers and taught Lotus, WordPerfect, Excel, etc., I changed careers focusing more on the software end. Note: I never had a stable back. I was one of the few in High School walking around with the "Milwaulkee Brace". Not cool! Especially during your teen years!!
