Mary's Story

November 2020 Fifty four years ago, upon graduation, it’s likely none in that class of 1966 – or any other WGHS graduate group – would have envisioned a year like 2020. In this season of gratitude in this year of uncertainty and surprises, I’m grateful for health and safety and the ability to avoid COVID contagion – at least so far. In life since Kremmling, I’ve been blessed to live in beautiful and wild areas of Montana, Idaho and now Washington state – and to work in an array of careers that put to use the solid English, communications and writing instruction of Miss Head and Mr. Baum. Retired now – and up until COVID imposed isolation – I’ve traveled to beautiful and wild areas of Italy, Peru and Novia Scotia and jumped out of an airplane (Doing so over the age of 65 requires a doctor’s note; isn’t THAT age discrimination?) Christmas eve on the Inca Trail, dining on quinoa soup and coca leaf tea; seeing Machu Picchu at sunrise on Christmas day – THAT didn’t require a doctor’s note, and it was a LOT more strenuous! I learned to make Italian noodles after hiking Cinque Terre, and had a rustic Italian dinner in Sorento’s oldest lemon grove on the Amalfi coast – AFTER scrambling through Etruscan tombs that few tourists ever see. Novia Scotia lobsters ARE the world’s largest, but, nope, I’m not up for eating that green brain stuff on bread! A group of us saw the St. Pat’s parade on the streets of Dublin; the natives ...Expand for more
said that day was the coldest parade day in 80 years. The Guinness went down well! We were nearly blown off the Cliffs of Moher on a day the attraction should have been closed; waves were crashing over those 400 foot cliffs. I did NOT kiss the Blarney Stone – instead I scattered some of dad’s ashes in the gardens there. The ONLY way to be at Mardi Gras is to be ON one of those floats instead of watching from the crowds below. You CAN buy a membership to one of the krewes for a year, if that’s of interest. Oh, the things you see from a Mardi Gras float! 2020 was to have included a climb up an Ecuadorian volcano and another hike in Italy’s Lake Country. But … saving those for 2021 or further in the future. Staying home this year means the garden and yard have never looked so good, nor the house been so organized. The two old rescue puggles are glad to have their human servant home more often. But they aren’t particularly happy about the recently rescued tom cat. Life was good in Kremmling. Growing up as one of those “dam kids” was unique. I’ve been back to the old camp at the base of the dam a few times; it’s sad to see it so changed, and it’s unfortunate groups of families and kids today miss the opportunity to scramble those hills in the summer – and ride the school bus all winter. Probably the cell service is deplorable down there – a good thing, perhaps. Here’s to solid beginnings, memories and life’s adventures.
