Materno's Story
I left Hawaii after graduating from University High School in 1951 as the first graduating class. It was called Teacher's College in the late forties because our teachers were teacher students from the University Of Hawaii. I joined the United States Coast Guard that same year and went to Alameda, California for booth camp for three months but was shortend to two months and was shipped to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut and was stationed there until I was discharged in 1954. 55 Hawaiian Sailors traveled by train in sleepers across the United States from Los Angels throught Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York then pulling into New London 7:00 p.m. on December 21,1951. cruises to Europe in the Coast Guard Bark Eagle sailing ship in the summers of 1952 and 1953. I stayed back in New London and worked in the area and married Fay Toohey in December 21, 1957. We have two sons, Bruce Wayne and Scott Benito and grandsons from Scott and Lucille, Ryan,Shaun, and seven year old Kai born of Melissa and Bruce my eldest son. I worked in the area and was anautomobile mechanic for 16 years in dealerships in the area and left the trade in January of 1981 and collected unemployment for six months to the day than started working at Connecticut College as a custudian for four years and woked as carpenter in maintenance for twenty two years and retired in December 31, 2007. It was a blessing in disguise to have left the mechanic trade and became an employer of Connecticut College. Personally, it is one of the best employer in the region.
