Matt's Story

Life I joined the military when I was 21. I have since finished my enlistment and am now living in Virginia Beach working as a government contractor in the field of digital communications. I would love to talk to old classmates/friends. Just sign my guestbook, and I will hit you up! School High School was a bit of a blurr to me. I still remember many of my teachers, and some of my classmates, but I never finished high school....even after 2 attempts...at 2 different schools... but not for lack of ability, just lack of motivation. Oh well, I guess some people are just "late bloomers." College I am currently working towards a BAS in Electronics Engineering. Workplace Man, work is definately different. I went from buss boy and dishwasher at Ponde"gross"a steakhouse, to a small stint in retail working for Best-Buy and Wal-Mart. Afterwards I decided to get back into the restaurant work and did the cook thing for Bob Evans. I moved from there to Super Smokers BBQ and waited tables for a little bit. I moved from there to Longhorn Steakhouse and did the cook thing once again. I guess about a year later i decided that 10 dollars an hour just wouldn't cut it forever, and up and joined the military. From the experience and training I recieved in the Navy I now have a great career starting as a digital communications technician. I am a government contractor and work on communications equipment on board Navy ships; mostly Destroyers. I get to travel quite a bit too, which is something I enjoy. I would never want to work in a restaurant again, but I will have to admit, some of the best times I have ever had were during the restaraunt days, and all of the best friends I have ever had and still do have were once co-workers of...Expand for more
the food craft back then. Military I joined the Navy in 2001 soon after 9-11. I shipped off to boot camp in March of 2002. I got through boot camp and went through training in Great Lakes, Illinois to become an Interior Communications Electrician. After training, I took a month of leave at home then shipped out to Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean. There is was working at the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station. I had a great time and made many great life long friends while there. I also advanced to E-4 and became IC3. After 14 months overseas, I traveled back to the US and took another month off to visit family. I then shipped to Norfolk, Virginia and became a plankowner of the new LPD class ship USS San-Antonio. While onboard the ship I spent time in New Orleans in 2004, where I advanced to E-5 and became IC2. I then moved to Gulfport Mississippi in 2005. I was living on the ship and tied to the pier 27 miles from the eye of Hurricane Katrina when she hit. I helped with relief efforts there, and then commissioned USS San-Antonio in Corpus Christi, Texas. While there I was part of a wreath laying ceremony at the Alamo in SAn Antonio. After commissioning, the ship came back to Norfolk where she was homeported. We spent over 250 days out to sea certifying and testing the new ship and all her equipment. throughout the 2006 year and visited New York city 2 times, and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In November of 2006 I decided to part the Navy with an Honerable Discharge and persue a career as a government contractor, which is what I am currently doing here in Virginia Beach, VA. I made many friends and had many wonderful experiences in my small time as a sailor, and I will never forget it!
