Matt's Story
Life
For the past two years, I have been focusing on work, and on rediscovering myself. Both have begun paying off for me, rather nicely. I have an apartment just north of downtown Dallas, and while I still feel that Texas is not where I want to be, it is the place I have most enjoyed living in this area. I've not had any women in my life in the last couple years (the previous five years gave me quite enough of that for awhile!), and don't plan to for a few more years, at least.
Some travel to the northeast the past few years has renewed my desire to live in Boston, which is where I Âwent away to school for what turned out to be my Freshman year of college. I am working on getting back there, trying to both shed much of the junk I have accumulated, and get myself into a position where I can afford the costs associated with living downtown in a large northern city.
College
After high school, I ran off to Boston University for college. I stayed there for a year, and left because I didn't know what I wanted to do and did not feel right asking my parents to spend $18,000+ per year for me to figure that out.
I returned to Arlington and attended UTA for the next year, with much the same result as in Boston. At the end of that year (Spring 1990) I joined the Army, to postpone deciding what I wanted to do, pay for the rest of my education, and in general get a clue.
After discharging in late 1992, I returned to UTA the following Spring to study Social Work. Over the next 3 years, I became involved in Student Government, complete...Expand for more
d 3 internships, and received my Bachelor of Social Work in December 1995.
Workplace
I have been with Accenture for the past 6 years, and while my first 3 with the company were in a job I ended up not particularly enjoying (and getting paid steadily during the recession), I have since taken on a role that is both challenging and enjoyable. Our project team has grown from a small uncertain team of 40 or so to a 200+ person separate unit of our company, managing 8000 people around the world.
Military
After 2 aimless years of school and after quitting 3 jobs in as many months, I realized I needed to develop a work ethic. I called up that recruiter who had annoyed me all throughout high school, made an appointment, and joined the Army.
While I was in combined Basic Training/Tank School, Iraq invaded Kuwait, the US responded, and Basic suddenly got very serious. I was out of basic in time for Desert Shield to turn to Desert Storm, but was fortunate to watch the war on CNN from Ft. Knox, Kentucky, where I was stationed for my complete 2-year enlistment.
My time in was mostly dull-- assigned to a training unit, cleaning and repairing tanks so that we could teach new officers and NCO's how to operate, command, and break them. As with anything, I had some good experiences, some bad, with lots of "filler" in between.
I discharged honorably in October 1992, and proceeded to use my newfound discipline (and my Army College Fund) to get my degree. My time in the Army, I classify as "I disliked it while I was in, but I'm glad I did it."
