Matt's Story
I was more than happy to get out of Cradock. It was in many ways a sad place for me, but did have some happy moments especially doing plays with Pat Blake or in the band. I went to VA Tech in 1966 and graduated in 1970. Although Cradock Baptist Church was important to me, I went mainly to please my mother, Edith Evans who taught at James Hurst School. I "got religion" in 1969 in the turmoil of "well what are you going to do with your life" and decided to go to seminary. I was not sure how I would use my degree. If the Vietnam War was not winding down I probably would have become a military chaplain. I graduated in 1973 and became the pastor of a small rural church in Orange County, VA. Two more churches came along before I got "beat up and burn out" by one here in Richmond in 1983.
I began working in the "real" world, taught computer classes for Radio Shack, sold cars, did sales training until I started what is now my business, "Logo Dynamics".
Two best things what ever happened to me is meeting my wife, Linda,in 1970 when I worked for her church one summer. We have been married 44 years as of this December. Our son, Christian lives 20 minutes away with this wife, Misti and they have one son, Nathan, now 8 and Leah who is 3. All are a great source of joy for me. Nathan is tender hearted like me and Leah is a pistol like my sister, Patti who died in 1964 when I was 16.
I also am thankful that I got a chance to start my own business. No mistake about it, it has not made me rich but given me a good return on my time spent and allowed me the freedom to be my own boss. I pity those people who go through life without the courage to step out on their own and become an entrepreneur. In reality, the only security you have in this world is what you make yourself. It really "bugs" me that the politicians and news people talk abo...Expand for more
ut how bad things are. Opportunities have never been greater for me in the 20 years I have been in business. As a "sideline" I teach e-mail seminars for Constant Contact so have the opportunity to help other small business owners. I will probably work unitl I die but that is fine with me. I saw my father-in-law sit and watch soaps for several years before his death and that is no way to live in my estimation.
Fortunately for me, what I do in retail and wholesale sales of imprinted items, (tee shirts, key chains, etc) doesn't take a rocket scientist. I might just make it working until I am 90.
I also have been active in this community and worked with several others to start a community celebration that atttracts about 12-15,000 people each third Saturday in September. I worked to get it started from 1997 to last year and turned it over to others and said, "It's yours to take care of now". I have gotten more active in my church and am a Deacon and occasional preacher.
I like to cook and have been having a series of pancake breakfasts on Saturday mornings. My secret is adding cinnamon and brown sugar so they smell good and turn a great shade of brown. I did about 300 pounds of pork barbecue not too long ago for a church event.
I like going out on a 17 ft center console we got in 2006. I liked to go out on party boats from Willoughby during high school and always dreamed about having my own boat. My lesson is don't buy a piece of junk that is a money pit you pour alot into and is not reliable. I did on a 20 year old runabout. Save your money and buy something new you can depend on. I don't get it out as often as I like but had a great some great days at Chincoteague in the past few years.
Whatever has happened to you I would be interested in knowing about it. If you are ever in the Richmond area, let me know. MD
