Matt's Story
Life
Married Sandra (Sandi) Bedford on 16 March 1991 at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Richmond. I met her at Old Dominion University where we both graduated and both worked in the Computer Center.
We bought our home in Suffolk Virginia in 1991, where we still live.
We had our first son Richard Michael on April 20, 1995, and our second son Andrew Christopher on October 23, 1998.
School
Well, naturally I'm rather embarassed about my high school years, and think "gawd, what a geek I was!" If I knew then what I know now!!!!!
But there were certain high points... Battle of the Brains... German Class and Mrs. Hornberger... Art Class... DontChuMessWithJimTaylor and the computer lab... Getting the second highest score on the Mu Alpha Theta test (and beating Mickey's score) despite my consistent C average in math... Seeing "Man and Superman" in the round with the AP English class in DC...
But the best moment was asking the guidance counselor "If you know so much about careers, why are you a guidance counselor?" and not getting suspended.
College
Went to Old Dominion University, majored in Computer Science, graduated August 1989. While taking classes I worked in the Computer Center (where I met Sandi whom I married after graduation) and I also got involved in the Student S...Expand for more
enate. Got elected to Student Body Vice-President. The whole thing was a very good experience for me -- it was what I had wanted high school to be like.
In 2006 I completed a Master's degree in Information Technology at Virginia Tech through the Internet.
Workplace
By working part time in the Computer Center at ODU I was able to get my foot in the door to a full-time job there three weeks before graduation, so I never actually had to go looking for a job. I worked there for 5 years, leaving as a programmer/analyst doing COBOL on mainframes to go work for Lillian Vernon as a PC programmer/analyst and got promoted to Senior Programmer/Analyst.
After 2.5 years I left there to work for Allied Colloids, a chemical manufacturer, and after a year and a half got promoted to Manager of Information Technology, but then six months later the company got bought in a hostile takeover, so I left to join Dollar Tree Stores.
I worked for Dollar Tree Stores as a senior programmer/analyst, software engineer, and senior web developer over the course of six and a half years.
Last October I left Dollar Tree to join a consulting company, Platinum Solutions, to work as a Senior Consultant providing web programming support to the Navy.
Now I work as Web Development Manager at Amerigroup Corporation.
