Matt's Story
Life
Well, I've been kinda busy. Somehow I graduated from high school. Joined the Navy, traveled the world, blowing stuff up as I went. Got out of the Navy, traveled the world, blowing stuff up as I went. Got married, stopped blowing stuff up, had kids, became a salesman, got divorced, went back to school, got a degree in Engish (with honors) so I could teach high school, but that didn't work. So I went back to blowing stuff up!
(update 2005) Then I went back to finish my credential, completed my credential and to celebrateÃÂwent out and blew stuff up. So now I am in limbo. I blow stuff up and substitute teach. Well actually I tell stories about blowing stuff up. Next update will be about how I got a job teaching highschool for way less than I make blowin' stuff up.
(update 2007) Well I got the job teaching English for way less than I received for "blowin' stuff up!" It only seems fair that I would get a job teaching at a continuation high school where the students are just as obnoxious as was as a high school student. Seriously I am very happy with the job, but there is a little part of me that wants to go to Iraq and make $25K a month "blowin stuff up." Seriously I won't go. Not because of the danger, but because I am philosophically opposed to what we are doing in Iraq.
(update 2008) Well we did so good raising test scores that they cut staff and raised class sizes, which means --guess what? I am back to blowin' stuff up! Oh and I got another divorce. That's what I get for getting married to a girl half (well almost half) my age.
(update 2012) Me, Vice Principal of a high school. LOL!
School
Let's see, we'll...Expand for more
start with the easy part. Mr. Vick was my most favored teacher. He was my best teacher, although I don't remember anything he taught, except that one day he taught us (unintentionally) how to swear. Thank god for the jocks passing foul notes into Al Shiya's freshman English class. Ironically I would retake freshman English as a senior because I failed freshman Enlish, only to later become a teacher of English.
College
Yeah, I went. It was easy--really, really easy. It is amazing what one can do when one is focused, or maybe after EOD school anything is easy.
It was a lot of fun being almost 40, looking younger than that and being turned loose on a college campus.
Workplace
I (was, see update below) doing project management for UXO (unexploded ordnance) clean-ups. It allows me to travel and pays the bills. I still plan on taking a huge paycut and teaching high school English someday. (Yeah Mr. Vick!)
Update March of 2007
As I near the end of my second year of teaching, it is about time to update my bio. As I speculated, I quit my lucrative career blowing stuff up and took a $50,000 a year pay cut to teach English at Zoe Barnum High School. It is a continuation high school located in Eureka, California. The students are pretty much like I was except they attend school more often and get better grades.
A funny thing though, my high school transcript helped me get into Humboldt State University. Because Payson graded backwards, my 3.3975 GPA looked good. I have my transcript framed and hanging in my classroom and I failed 13 classes! How in the world did I graduate. Man, they must have wanted me out of there bad.
