Matt's Story
After escaping Detroit, I left for the Navy; starting life in San Diego, CA. After Desert Storm, I went to Europe and buried myself in mediocrity amongst the heavy-hitting go-getters of the south...I identified, not without much toil, my own inner swine and learned what not to do in Spain with a head full of Grappa.
I retreated to our own east coast to finish college at the University of Connecticut in 1995; yet another starving English major. Thankfully, a friend from school was starting a music magazine in Phoenix and thought I would make a good fit.
Phoenix for me, in the mid-90's, was a confusing mix of what was stingingly very real and what was fluffy dreamtime fantasy; the latter winning out most times with the equally confusing betrayal of a messy drug-addiction. Those days are dangerous and blurry for good reasons.
The magazine was a smash and grab position for 3 years, and came with the proper perks for the breed of monster I had become; free drugs, free alcohol, free drugs, free flights, free drugs, free drugs, free drugs, free drugs...free EVERYTHING! My Thrusday kickoffs slowly became my Summer kickoffs...It was ...Expand for more
time to kick something, and thankfully I had the people in my life to help me see that.
Between leaving Phoenix and arriving in Seattle, I found solice in Omaha, Nebraska...Ah, sweet sanctuary. I stayed for a year, picked up bartending and an incredible palate for wine, loved and lost, learned the perfect way to take a Vegas roadtrip, made wonderful friends for life...and in retrospect, stayed in Omaha about 3 months too long.
Around and around we shall go...
I was Seattle-bound in 1999, with some friends from Omaha; Jeff and Kara. We left on the morning after St. Pat's Day...I think I slept the entire 3 day trip to Washington state. I needed my rest for that city, and I KNEW it. Seattle will eat the weak.
I finished a program for commercial diving in 2000 and immediately joined the ranks of aquanauts all over the world. There aren't many of us that do it so, when you DO get a chance to shake the hand of a diver, know that he knows that he'll die somewhere, hopefully, beneath the waves; thats the closest we'll ever get to being a hero.
