Matt's Story

Life I graduated from Western Oregon and then went to law school at the University of Idaho. I loved the drier climate of Idaho and decided not to return to Oregon. I graduated law school and took a job as the chief deputy prosecuting attorney in Valley County, Idaho. After a couple of years I opened my own shop in private practice and did everything from public defender work to divorce cases. The pay was good, but I couldn't watch the prosecutor mistreat the community. I decided to do something about it and I ran for the elected prosecuting attorney position in 2004. I won the election with nearly 70% of the vote. I enjoy prosecuting, especially the jury trials, but it can be stressful at times. Over the last 8 years both the Sheriff and the Commissioners of Valley County have shown themselves to be corrupt. As a result I no longer wish to be a part of Valley County. I decided not to run for a 3rd term and pulled out of the election. I told the community I was not running and did not want the job. My name was on the ballot and even after telling people not to vote for me I still received 35% of the vote. January 7, 2013, is my "release" date. I am happy to be gearing up to go back to private practice. The highlight of my last couple of years was winning a really tough sexual abuse jury trial and successfully suing Southwest Airlines on behalf of a client. ach (12), and Karly(7). We live in Cascade a small town in the west central mountains of Idaho. Unlike Oregon, we actually have four seasons here. Winter is rather long as we are at about 5,000 feet in elevation, though we have great skiing and snowmobiling. The area is a resort area and I have a great view from my deck of the 20 mile lake with 7,800 foot mountains in the background. I can see one of the country's newest four season resorts (Tamarack) from my house. Our county is a recreation destination county, so our little county is not so little in the summer. When not working and enjoying the outdoors I coach youth sports and high school varsity football. My first year as the varsity defense coach we won the state championship. For those who have never seen 8 man football it is wild. Very high scores are common. Our defense was by far the best in the state. We did not allow a rushing touchdown until the state semifinal game! That is completely unheard of in 8 man football. It was so much fun! The championship game was played at the Boise State University stadium on the blue turf. It was really great to be a part of it. We haven't done to well since then and missed the playoffs last year going 5-3. This year started off rough, losing 46-0, but I actually think we will be ok. I also coach Micah and Zach in baseball and basketball. When I go back to Canby to visit family I am glad we stayed in Idaho. I can't believe how much the whole area has grown! I really enjoy the small town living. You can make a big difference in a small town. UPDATED 9-18-12
