Matthew's Story
I know alot of people were surprised, I did the NYC Marathon 18 times. I did the 2007 Marathon, the week before our 30th reunion, which I attended with my wife. I've done marathons in San Diego, N.J and the 100th Boston Marathon. Normally one who would have to qualify for the race, by running a specific time for your age group, but that Boston race in 1996, they had a lottery, and fortunately I was picked. Boston normally has 10000 runners for the marathon, they accepted almost 40000 runners! I've had many jobs over my 25 plus years of working in retail and restaurants, one of my first jobs I had was actually cooking funnel cakes at a NYC street fair in 1980 . There were several teachers, I would've like to see again, among them Mr. Adams, my Probability and Statistics teacher-he appreciated the effort I made to understand the work, even though I was struggling. He gave me a "C" for a final grade. Mr. Lanzalotto (now sadly deceased), was my outdoor track coach. He was a man who had great knowledge of the sport of Track, and always encouraged me, even when I was...Expand for more
n't the fastest or swiftest. This past year was a difficult one, my older brother Mark passed away March 14, less than a month after our family and friends celebrated his 50th birthday in February. What a devastating event as he died in his sleep of heart failure, then less than a month later, my father, had to have heart bypass surgery to help compensate for his pacemaker, not working properly. He had 3 more surgeries after that because he kept bleeding internally. But thank God, he's doing ok now. One event that stands out in my mind, as the wildest(maybe craziest), thing I ever did in High School, was when I received my Track letter certificate at the letter awards ceremony. I shook Mr. Lanzalotto's hand, shook Mr. Unger's hand, but when I turned around behind me to shake Mr. Sweeney's hand, I reached and shook Charlie Badagliacca"s hand instead(remember Charlie?) and after I did that faux pas, I was so embarassed I walked off the stage, without ever shaking Mr. Sweeney's hand. I believe I shook his hand later-funny how I don't remember that part though.
