Matthew's Story
After my 11th grade year (99) I lost track with a lot of my friends due to moving south to Charlottesville. I started the first half of my senior year at William Monroe, and ended up moving back to our previous residence to finish out my senior year at Gar-Field.
After graduating, I went on to enroll in the Art Institute of Washington, and yes, I was probably the kid who was drawing in class instead of paying attention. Despite my horrible grades in high-school, I ended up graduating from college on the dean's list, as well as becoming a mentor for fellow classmates. I earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a focus in Media Arts and Animation.
Shortly after graduation I joined up with a classmate to start an entertainment company which later evolved into a software development company which was centered around a patent I helped co-invent. By the time I decided to exit, we were talking to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies on how we could put our technology to use in their line of work.
After that, decided to try my hand at the self-employment life, developing media-rich websites, and online experiences. Experienced some success, but was hard to accomplish large scale success without a network of contacts. Ended up moving to Nashville, ...Expand for more
TN to pursue a career in game art and design, frequenting board game conventions primarily in the Ohio area. Met with some success doing that, but decided it wasn't really my passion.
Shortly after TN, I moved further west to Kansas City, KS with a business associate to build out own logistics tracking company utilizing my history of design and technology, and his history of business development and sales. We started gaining traction more with memorabilia for video games, so we pivoted and focused on that. We started to become big in our space, but every time we grew it accelerated how fast we were burning through our survival funds and ultimately we ran out of money.
Ended up moving back to VA with family, and became the head of a local marketing agency's technology department that was located in Old Town, Alexandria for a good 8 years, leading a team of developers and interactive designers. Experienced a great amount of success and fulfilment in professional advancement there.
Now, I use the skills I built having led a design agency's technology department to design and build websites, and marketing portals for B2B and B2B2C clients, ranging from local, to global scale. In my spare time, I've been teaching myself video game design and development.
