Maurice's Story

Workplace. After USAF, worked for Industrial Nucleonics, renamed to Accuray, in Columbus, OH. Began as Machine Operator in Data Processing, progressed to Programmer, then to Programmer/Analyst. Concentrated on Systems Programming, after working on BOMP, Bill of Material Processor, and related projects. First person to write in Cobol at the company. Became specialist in OCR on a property appraisal system. Left there and came to Michigan to handle OCR programing and design for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Job was as Senior Systems Programmer then promoted to Chief Systems Programmer and placed in charge of 4 peers and concentrated on MVS systems support through system performance and capacity planning. Installed MICS and SAS for BCBSM along with related products. Left BCBSM for AAA Michigan to bring their performance and capacity planning area up to current levels. Installed, modified and supported MICS (MVS Integrated Control System) along with SAS, TSO/MON and other various performance products. During this period served the MICS User Group as Chairman. Got chance for early retirement after 15 years so I left and am now retired. Still working with computers (PC) in supporting volunteer work for Boy Scouts of America. Military USAF - Enlisted 17Oct61, Indianapolis, IN. Basic Training at Lackland AFB, TX from 17Oct61 until Dec61 with transfer to Keesler AFB, MS (Biloxi). Finished Basic there and entered Morse Intercept Operator training. Left Keesler for Chennault AFB, LA in May1962. OJT as POL Specialist (Petroleum, Oil. and Lubricants). Left Chennault for USAF Academy Preparatory School at USAF Academy, CO in Jul62. Member of C Flight. This was the second class at the Prep School. Graduated from Prep School in May63. Received appointment to Academy in Jul63. Returned to active duty at Seymour-Johnson AFB, NC in 1963. Applied for B-52 Gunner position--denied due to first term airman. Retrained via OJT to Personnel Specialist, Non-mechanized. Applied for loadmaster position late 1964. Received transfer to Loadmaster field on C-130's in Feb65. Transferred to Lockbourne AFB, OH. Discharged from active-duty March 16, 1967. Joined USAF Reserves as C-130A Loadmaster, March 12, 1977. Level. Unit activated and deployed to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates October 1990 in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Returned home April 1991. Unit was switched from C-130's to KC-135E in 1991. Converted to Boom Operator at that time with CCTS training at Castle AFB, CA. Retired from the Reserves April 1, 1996. Final rank - E-8, Senior Master Sergeant. In private life earned Private pilot license. Qualified for RG/High Performance A/C. Retractable gear, etc. Owned 2 aircraft-Cessna 210 and a Cessna 310. Have been a volunteer with BSA for over 50 years. Served as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Training Chair and ADC for Roundtables. Have been a Wood Badge Course Director. (Management techniques, etc.) Have been awarded District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver and Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. Want to know more, contact me. On fun side have ridden over 750 different roller coasters. Have travelled to Canada, England, Scotland and led tours to England. Via military have visited England, Germany, Spain, Italy, Iceland, Norway, United Arab Emirates (have actually driven thru them), Egypt, Crete, Azores (Portuguese Islands), Saudi Arabia, Quatar, Oman, Bahrain, Dominion Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Panama, Brazil (Brasilia and Rio), Columbia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia, Peru. Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia. Took Jungle Survival in Panamanian jungle complete with white water river ride on my LPU (life preserver). What a ride! Currently serving as host on C-130 at the Selfridge ANGB Military Air Museum on Sundays from April thru October as needed. Scouting: Have been involved in BSA since 1964. Have served as Cubmaster in 2 units. Have served as Scoutmaster in 2 units. Have been involved with adult leader training since 1966. Have been a Wood Badge course director. Led Team 2 during the 'A Century of Values' project from 2008 thru 2011. Have been recognized with District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver and Vigil honor in Order of the Arrow. Have led groups of adult Scouters on trips to England. Currently conduct adult leader training during summer camp season at Cole Canoe Base for 15 years. Currently serving as an Assistant District Commissioner for Roundtables, District Training Chair, and a member of MCC James E. West Committee.
