Mavis's Story
In 1950 my parents moved to Rivers, MB coming from Windsor On, and I attended Rivers Elementary School until grade 8 in June of 1955. We then moved to Saskatoon, SK where I attended Bedford Road Collegiate until 1958. Unfortunately, I did not graduate from there but did continue my education later in life and got my grade 12 equivilencey. I had a lot of good memories of Saskatoon at BRCI where I was in choir with Mr Nickels, played Volleyball with Miss George as coach, was a cheerleader for the house of Roosevelt and went to many football games, (never did understand all the rules of that game). I then went to work for Eaton's in the accounting dept for 2 years and then proceeded to follow my father's footsteps into the Air Force. I was trained as a Medical Assistant and stayed in for the 3 years that I signed up for and thoroughly enjoyed my new career. But, as fate would have it, I met a handsome young man who stole my heart and we married before I got out of the Air Force. It was a great time when my Dad got stationed to Trenton where I was and my sister joined up and got moved to the same base in Trenton. The publicity dept of the Air Force then took pictures of the 3 of us on one base. and published it in all the papers where our homes were. I got married in 1961 and we had 2 children while in Trenton and then moved on to Manitoba, back to Rivers, CJATC. It seemed like I was in a circle going round and round. We lost our daughter there and buried her at age 20 months in Feb 1966. We then had a 3rd child, another son, in Brandon. My husband then got out of the service and we proceeded to Alberta for 2 years before a business that he was in sent him back to Ontario to Scarborough to live. There, we had our 4th child and number 3 son. Our family was complete now and we had many great memories in our new life, new homes, and new friends. But, as life never stands still a new opportunity arose and my husband took on a new challenge with his own business and back to Manitoba again. We have lived here ever since and my sons have married and travelled and moved back here too.
When 2008 began the New Year my husband took a sudden stroke and died in January. It has left a big hole in my life, but I find as each year passes you make new memories and the pain subsides. It would have been our 50th Anniversary this year. In this day and age, they tell me that is a long time to be with one man. But, they don't know what they are missing by changing partners so many times. Time passed so fast and now I have trouble remembering those days that we had differences, we always went to bed forgiving one another. Thanks be to God.

-20 hours per week and look after my 12 year old Pomeranian who acts like he is one year old all the time. He forgets I am getting older now and can't run as fast.
As time passes, I will try to update my story.
Well, time has passed by again and it is now June of 2013, I have retired from retail work as of last November and then in January, my dog passed away with cancer. What a transition life takes you through. I am now in the process of getting some maintenance work done on my home in anticipation that maybe it will last until I am ready to sell it and move on to senior living elsewhere. Right now, I enjoy being out in my yard and talking to whoever walks by my fence on their daily walks. I love the sunny weather that Manitoba enjoys. But, I also enjoy flying to new places to visit my relatives across the country. My mom is still living in Victoria and that is a beautiful place to visit 2 to 3 times a year. But, the rest of my siblings live east in Ontario and Nova Scotia which gives me opportunity to travel from coast to coast in our beautiful country.
The year 2013 did bring a few more surprises for our family. My Mom suffered a bit of dementia in the spring which has stayed with her permanently, and some funny things have happened as a result of that episode. I'm glad we can all laugh at some things. As a result of that occurence I have had to take 4 trips out to look after legal and medical matters and am leaving again this month for 2 weeks for trip number 5. But, this visit will be just for visiting with her and enjoying the Christmas season for who knows how many more enjoyable visits I will get with her. She is 95 now and still enjoys playing the piano and organ. Something she never forgot how to do and is a blessing.
August took me down to Ontario to visit my siblings (3) in Ontario right now, and we had a wonderful visit travelling around eastern townships and looking at a bit of history. We visited the monument of the Avro Arrow this time where one of the test pilots lived in Barry's Bay. We visited the old Railway station which has been converted into a museum and many craft stores along the main street..
Then November brought another sad event to the family when my mother-in-law passed away a month before she would turn 98. That brought many family members back to Manitoba for the funeral and a good visit with folks we hadn't seen since the last funeral. Sad it is that that seems to be the only time family gets togeither, that, and weddings. So, now I prepare for Christmas and a trip west, hopefully, to warmer weather as old man winter came early to Manitoba this year giving us temperatures of -30's and -40's. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone for 2013-2014.
