Mavis's Story
Hello All,
First of all, CONTACT ME ON FACEBOOK!!
It is free, and a great way to reconnect with old friends. Also check out my business page on there, Mavis Duke Hinton's Books.
I am not getting gold membership, so if you've contacted me and haven't heard back, that's why!
The bulk of my career has been the teaching of high school English, mainly 12th and AP. I've also been an editor, office manager, and police officer (yes, you saw right!). I taught English online part time with a school in TX, retired in 2013, and have written four books--the first was released in '06 (for reasons too long to explain here, it is currently being republished as I AM SARGE), and the second, I AM DACHSHUND, was released in May 2011. DACHSHINDS FOREVER, A DACHSHUND'S TRIBUTE followed.
I enjoy traveling, reading, writing, cooking, being with family, Facebook (are any of you on there?) and laughing.
I really enjoyed school, 8th - 11th grade, at Ft. Greely. We left there in '64, so I spent part of my senior year in Miami, FL, and graduated in Sanford, NC--Greenwood High School. Abe Love, whom I dated in Ft. Greely, recently contacted me on Facebook, the first contact I've had with anyone from Ft. Greely! I nearly passed out after all those years. I ...Expand for more
have now crossed paths with 8 or 9 others on Facebook :).
Clark, also a teacher, has been my hubby extraordinaire for 44 years--we have two married daughters (WONDERFUL young women) two granddaughters, and a grandson. They are ages 11, 10, and 5. We do have a "baby" in our house: our black-and-tan dachshund, Duke. He owns the place!
I've lived a number of places before Ft. Greely: NC, France, Germany, NJ, VA, as well as after Ft. Greely, as you probably have: FL, VA, MD, NC, OH. We currently live in the Atlanta area.
Hope you remember me as a friendly girl. I remember hiding in a closet at school and jumping out in Mr. Van Zantan's chorus class! I was scared of the principal, Mr. Peterson, but for the life of me, I don't remember why . . . I never got into trouble. I played a black maid in one of the drama productions, I recall. That stage makeup was very uncomfortable! I also emceed the "Miss Ft. Greely" pageant when I was a sophomore. I was in a bowling league, won several trophies, and enjoyed the teen club as well.
Alaska was and will always remain one of my favorite places to live. I have so many wonderful memories from there. I hope to hear from some of you! Remember, see you on Facebook.
