Max's Story
Married, one son who now lives in Atlanta. After I graduated from Auburn (Mechanical Engineer), I came here to Kingsport, TN (NE corner of state) and worked of Eastman Chemical Company. (It used to be part of Eastman Kodak). Kingsport's population, including suburbs, is about 90,000, so we have many good "big town" things without many bad "big town" things. We're in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, so it's a beautiful area.
I worked in a Lab that was used to do experimental work with various plastics which Eastman produces. The one that I worked with the last 16 years of my career was the polyester that's used to make soft drink bottles. We didn't make bottles to sell, we only produced the polyester and sold it to bottle producers. At one time, Eastman was the world's largest producer of that plastic. Billoins (yes billions) of pounds per year. And we produced many other types of plastics, all of which were sold primarily in rail car quantities. In other words.... a whole lots of plastics...Expand for more
. Eastman also produces chemicals and fibers. As you might have guessed, Eastman is a BIG company.... about 12,000 employees. It operates 24/7, 365 days a year. My primary responsibility (along with other engineers) was to keep our customers happy. So when I wasn't working in the Lab, I was traveling all over the USA, Canada, South America and Europe. Even went to South Africa once.
After I'd worked at Eastman of about a year, I got drafted and spent a year in Vietnam. Thank God I made it back with all my body parts in tact!!! The whole army experience is something I'd never want to do again, but I must say I now wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
I'm retired now, and love to play golf. A few years back, I was a pretty good player. But now, not so good, but it's still fun to play with my buddies, regardless of what score I have. Oh well.... I also enjoy doing wood work and making things from stained glass. Now that's an interesting hobby..... but it requires a lots of patience.
