Max's Story

I spent my high school years in the background. I tried to stay out of the way of bullies (and there were a couple) since I only weighed 145 lbs. I was a good student, well liked by teachers, but not so much by certain other students (particularly the "not so smart" ones). Since I was small in stature, and somewhat "nerdy". I got picked on on occasion but only had one actual fight. A guy named Dan McCarty picked me at random to beat up. I didn't really even know him but he stalked me for months, during my sophomore year, to fight him. I had no idea why. Finally, I realized that he would not leave me alone, until he had his conquest. On the appointed day, we met after school. I joked around and pretended to fight, since I really didn't know how. He finally punched me in the nose once (which bled profusely), and asked me if I had had enough. I replied that I had and that he had not accomplished anything but proving that he was a bully in front of a lot of kids. He looked at me oddly and shook my hand. From that day forward, he was nice to me. Go figure! Romantically, I was a failure through my junior year, since girls seemed to gravitate toward me for either advice or to use me to make their boyfriends jealous. an example would be my unrequited love for Janet Thurman. As you may recall, we were always assigned to "home room" alphabetically, which always seated me between Shirley Thompson and Janet. We had been seated this way since the 2nd grade. I didn't think about Janet much during the 7th and 8th grade. She was av...Expand for more
erage, had the "pointy, thick rimmed glasses of the day, and in general, kind of "nerdy" like I was. But, she was very sweet and I always liked her and we were friends. Also, she hadn't really "blossomed" if you get my meaning. Then, during the summer, she started the 9th grade as a woman! She was absolutely gorgeous! She had long blonde hair, contact lenses and the nicest set of boobs, I had ever laid eyes upon (through clothes at least). She was beautiful! I was absolutely smitten.... I remained in love with her throughout high school, but unfortunately, she thought of me only as a friend. She would tell me about her boy problems and I would give her advice. She went steady with a Jock named Lonnie and I believe they did get married after school. I loved her so much that when I found out that she was going to Lubbock Christian College, I planned to go there too, just to be with her. However, when I found out that her and Lonnie were going to get married some day, I changed my plans. I was going to go the Amarillo J.C. and study radio and T.V. production. However, my car blew up and I had no money to fix it, so I joined the Navy, planning to go to college after 4 years using my G.I. Bill benefits. However, once I was in the service, I enjoyed it so much I stayed for 20 years. I retired, as a Chief Petty Officer with a bachelor's degree and a career as a health, safety and environmental specialist. I went in to private industry (TRW, Inc.) until I retired again in 2007. I now live in Michigan, with my second wife.
