Maxine's Story
Life
I am still single and childless. Many ask, "what's wrong with you?" the answer is...."nothing!" Starting a family was not part of the plan as of yet. Life has been good thus far and I am truly blessed for the most part. I hope that everyone understands that life has it "ups" and "downs" but you have to be mentally and spiritually strong to deal with day to day life experiences.
School
I truly enjoyed my school experiences in elementary, junior high and high school. This year is my 20 year reunion! Class of 1986 is in the MIX! Going to school was my escape and inspired me that I could do and be anything I wanted. ALL my teachers inspired me from Williams Elementary, Knudsen Junior High and Cass Technical High. All the experiences I encountered in school were an asset to my continued success today. The happiest moments in school were with close friends that I have today. Tonesia Head and I have been best friends since kindergarten and we never had any arguments because we always had a positive open line of communication. I miss my friends; Kiwana Morgan and Belinda Lawson. Dwight Little and Anthony Graham are my Boys! Rochelle Sallad, Joyce Halliburton, Lena Hill, Joyce Cathey, Kia Whitney, Tonesia and I continue to party and hang out together at Joyce's
annual birthday party! We have true friendships that will last a lifetime. I know I did not mention everyone, however
they are very dear to my heart....Expand for more
I always wondered what happened to Chris Riddick, Robert Dolton, Willie George to name a few...Somehow I am able to run into everybody and connect everyone together. Hey Dorothy Gatson! Oh, I
can't forget my girl Patricia Hicks whom I met in high school and as a result her mother and aunt were friends with
my parents when they migrated from the south. It was ironic that we later found that out. This is truly a small world.
College
College life was fun! I had the best time in college. I pledged AKA (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) and we chartered a chapter at Portland State University (Portland, OR), in which I was unanimously voted by my sorors to become the first president!! I remember pulling an all-nighter because I did not study for a final - I passed with an "A" but I vowed that I would never ever do that again! I attended a many of parties, however I passed up a lot parties to study as well.
I was so disturbed about the Rodney King verdict and the rioting in LA that I went to a professor with my concerns and he indicated that he would support me in what I wanted to do to bring awareness to the Portland State University campus. Therefore, we (the Black Cultural Affairs Board) hosted a Non Violent Forum on campus and about a thousand people attended the event. This initiated communication with the university and the African American student body of racial issues, in which everyone was afraid to discuss.
