Melanie's Story

School When I think of how little my classmates really knew me and understood me, and what they must assume about my life now, it makes me a little melancholy. We were all just kids then; what could we possibly know about the complexities of life, or of being a fallible human? Hopefully we've grown enough to no longer have the need to fit everyone into neat little boxes. I have, anyway. Have you? Let's just say that I had a rough beginning in life, and it took me years to overcome a lot of the obstacles of my upbringing. I've always had faith that I would be okay, and I am. Getting better all the time. My life is beautiful and full of blessings, and it just gets better and better the more I work and the more I give back to the world. I'm sure that I am a lot more successful career-wise and relationship-wise than almost anybody would have predicted, except perhaps for myself and those who really knew me best. Birth isn't necessarily destiny. College I attended Emory & Henry College for a while, then took hiatus to travel and get a grip on life and such. Then I went to UVA, the Wise branch. I have had some continuing education at ETSU and Virginia Highlands over the last decade. Have also taught a few classes there, mostly on botany-related and agricultural-related topics. Career I've done so many things over the years. I have a lot of interests, so whenever I have a chance to learn something new or take a new direction I have jumped on it. For many years I worked for the US Forest Service, starting out as a secretary and working my way up via training courses to several different jobs including firefighting, conservation, law enforcement, and youth counseling at a job training center for at-risk young adults. Several years ago I started putting my knowledge of plants and chemistry to work developing natural treatments for my husband's eczema. I came up with some products that got good results and were in a form that he was willing to use, so he doesn't need the dangerous topical steroid creams anymore. Word and demand spread, and a skincare company was born. After 2 years it had grown to the point where I had to make a decision between my "real" job and my "hobby". My family strongly supported making the leap, so I did. I've been in business full time for 3 years and have just opened my second brick-and-mortar store. I have accounts at spas and doctor's offices all over the world, and I do private label work and custom formulation work for several big-name skincare and cosmetic companies. My interest in essential oils moved into an interest in perfumery, and I have been studying with a mentor in Switzerland for 2 years now, learning the art of being a "nose". I have a line of 28 original Eau de Parfums in my collection now, and a total of 30 original fragrances in my bath and body line. I smile while I work, every day. P...Expand for more
ersonal I have two daughters, Lorelei and Storm, and I've been happily married for almost 15 years. We currently live in Johnson City Tennessee but, as soon as my girls are finished with school, I really intend to move west - far west. I continue to be an oddball and somewhat of a social misfit just as when I was younger, but as I age people tend to look upon me as a "colorful eccentric". Which is fine; I'm happy being who I am and I know that I am loved exactly as I am. I am happy to be the favorite mom of my daughter's circle of friends, which works out well as everyone gathers at my house...the better to keep an eye on what's going on. Lorelei is my little clone, we practically read one anothers' minds. Storm is a clone of her daddy, and they have a very close, empathetic relationship that is just magical to witness. My husband is the best daddy I have ever met in my entire life - very devoted, very hands-on, willing to put in the real work even on the not-so-fun days. We make a good team. He's also smart, funny, artistic, and he understands me better than anyone ever has - and still loves me, wonder of wonders! I can't imagine ever finding a better match in this world, we really are a well-oiled machine. He tells me that he feels like he pulled one over on the universe by finding someone like me and getting to keep her, and that's exactly how I feel about him as well. My in-laws couldn't be more perfect if I had picked them from a catalog. They really are the ideal family I never had. As for my blood family, it's mostly all gone now, everyone has pretty much died off except for myself and my daughters. So it goes. These days, in addition to running my business and parenting my girls, I am co-founder of our local chapter of PFLAG and I mentor teens caught in the crossfire between their parents religious convictions and their own inherent sexual orientation or gender identity wiring. In my opinion, there isn't such a surplus of love and understanding in the world that we can go around rejecting any of it as "not good enough". I'm also a member of the Johnson City Arts Council and the Johnson City Urban Development Authority, helping to create a beautiful locus of art, music and culture in the center of downtown. Johnson City is known as Little Chicago and we have about 2 blues clubs per city block now, in addition to restaurants covering just about every major ethnic variety and loads of local artists and artisans (including me, and my shop!). My husband has a photography gallery in my shop but will soon have his work in Nelson Fine Art Gallery. I'm very happy overall and I constantly feel like I have an angel looking over me to have gotten so much of what I want in life already. I wouldn't change a thing, and I am excited as I look forward to the future. My To-Do List for my life is many pages long, but I am chipping away at it.
