Melissa's Story
Life
Moved to Georgia after graduation. Then moved to Ohio where I married and had one daughter (Holly). Divorced in 1990 and been single since. Now have a boyfriend I've been with for four years. Moved to Parkersburg, WV in 1999. Currently work for Sunpower Manufacturing Company in Athens, Ohio as an assembler of cryocoolers. Holly is now 17, and does very well in school. Has been chosen for Whos Who in American Schools and the National Honor Roll. My life pretty much revolves around work and my daughter. I plan to come back to Oregon for a visit some day but West Virginia is now my home.
Workplace
I worked in the food service industry for 15 years before switching over to manufacturing and production. I worked for Ohio Wire Form and Spring Company in Columbus,Ohio for 7 years as a production supervisor. I moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia to be closer to my daughter and worked at Coldwater Creek in the framing department for 3 years. I put together, cut mats and frames for photographs and prints to be sold in a retail cataloge. I then was offered a job that paid more money for Sunpower Manufactur...Expand for more
ing Co. in Athens, Ohio. I assemble cryocoolers. The company was originally a research and development company. The founder of the company invented the Sterling Free Piston Engine. We build cryocoolers based on the free piston principle. One of the coolers, the M87 Cryocooler is on the RHessi satellite that is orbiting the sun. These coolers cool to a temperature of 60.5 degrees Kelvin. It is very interesting work and has been my favorite job so far.
I am now back in Washington living with my sister. I am having some medical problems with a kidney transplant. I had one 17 years ago and it is now aging out and I am no longer able to work. I have been put back on the transplant list at Swedish Hospital in Seattle and it could take 2 to 3 years for one to become available so I am just hanging out right now watching my nephew grow up. He is 4 years old and is cute as a button.
My daughter Holly is now 22 and is getting ready to get married, graduate from West Virginia University at Parkersburg and work her full time career at Coldwater Creek in the business office.
