Melissa's Story
School
When I think of high school, I remember all the basketball camps (I wasn't a participant, but I volunteered at them), babysitting, Mr. Heinz's English class, having to take the bus - then not having to take the bus. :0)
I remember house-sitting with Ora. And going to the lake every day in Summer!
I made a lot of mixed tapes. :0) I loved music and loved going to dances.
I also remember Young Life and going to Youth Group meetings and Morning Bible Studies. :0)
College
I was attending DeVry University, but that wasn't working out. Now I attend Strayer University. My major is Network Security. I love being in school, but I hate homework. :0)
Workplace
I work at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) on Bolling AFB. Bolling AFB is in Washington, DC. I love the DC area - but especially during hockey season. I'm not crazy about the traffic and humidity, but it's hard to find the perfect place that has everything you love and nothing you don't.
I work as an 'IT Specialist'. It's ok, but sometimes it can be a little tedious. My goal right now is Network Security and to learn more about that aspect of things. I'd like to find a job in Information Assurance/INOFOSEC. It interests me. Boring? Maybe so. :0)
Military
I went to Boot Camp in Feb 1995, in Great Lakes, IL. It was snowing when I arrived. Interesting...Expand for more
experience, that whole Boot Camp thing. :0)
I went to Data Processing Technician (DP) 'A' School in San Diego, CA. I arrived there in May, which is a beautiful time of year to arrive in Southern CA. Definitely one of the best Summers of my entire life!
My first duty station was the USS Simon Lake (AS-33), which at that time was in La Maddalena, Italy. Also one of the best times of my entire life! Many, many great memories there! :0)
From there, I went to a forward deployed Squadron - VQ-2 in Rota, Spain. Hated it there. Awful command to go to. One of the worst times of my life. Spain was nice, but the command itself, the people I worked for, were not good to me or for me. As an example, I had viral meningitis, and they recalled me from my home and made me work ~ even tho I was on SIQ. Later that very same day, they sent a coworker home so she could "rest" after a hard night of partying.
Then I got orders to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) on Bolling AFB, D.C. From there, I tried to go back to Italy, but the detailers wanted to send me to a carrier in Norfolk or a carrier in San Diego. I declined, they weren't budging. So I got out of the military altogether.
I miss the camaraderie tho, I have yet to find it outside of the military. And of course, I miss the 30 days leave a year!!! DEFINITELY miss that! :0(
