Melissa's Story
This is a bit confusing. I attended Mercy Elementary school from 1961 thru 1962, not 1963. Mrs. Curuthers was my teacher. Oh my, was she strict! i hated going to school that year, although i did love my reading teacher. I was in the 6th grade and from Okinawa moved to Tokyo where I graduated from ASIJ in 1968. We're any of you in Mrs. Curuthers' class with me? She would rap our heads hard with her knuckle if we dropped a pencil.

I'm a birder. Don't know if there are any guide books out there on Okinawan birds, but I did learn about the Okinawan rail when I saw its statue on the N part of the island on Google Earth.
The Okinawan people were always so gentle with me as a child, and I have since read that their way of child rearing is the foundation of Attachment Parenting. Doctors who came to the island after WWII were amazed at the lack of PTSD in their populace and studied them coming to the conclusion that it was due to their child rearing practices.
