Melissa's Story
My story, for Classmates.com purposes, started at St. Isidore School in Kindergarten. For nine years I tried my hardest but pretended not to, failed more than I succeeded and hovered at the social fringe of a too-small community; a self-made misfit. I learned independence and self-reliance.
My small pond grew when I went to Yuba City High School. By no means a 'popular kid' I managed to always have a pretty large and usually very nice network of friends; a novelty after my self-imposed social awkwardness of St. Isidore's. I did okay for myself; was a cheerleader one year, caused a little havoc with the Drama class for a couple of years and became rather lethal with a tall flag. I even spoke at graduation, though definitely not because of my grades or social status. I learned to balance my priorities, to multi-task and to put out the least amount of effort for the most amount of reward.
College at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is when I really became me. I was finally comfortable in my own skin and had developed the beginnings of social grace. I moved in small circles of select friends. I kept myself from getting into too much trouble by being a nanny, forcing me to remain a good roll-model. I developed a passion for travel and I discovered that I am good at helping people and teaching children.
After college I traveled around Europe for a while. It was a blast. I worked ...Expand for more
in England at Transport for London in the Buses department. I visited with family and just had a good time experiencing Europe. It was my third time over and by then I was very familiar with the culture so I assimilated easily.
When I came back I returned to the mother-ship and taught at. St. Isidore¿s for a couple of years. As a teacher, I remembered how strong the social awkwardness of a small school could be and I tried to keep an eye out for the students who might be in similar situations to mine. I hope I did a good job and like to think that I really made a difference in my students¿ lives.
During this time I met my hunny, Stephen. He too is a St. Isidore alum, though from a different era. When he decided that he needed to move to Washington to be with his children I followed after him. We created a very nice family for ourselves, his children would stay often and we 'adopted' two girls of our own who like to bark at neighbors and other dogs. I would substitute teach when I could but my home life usually kept me very busy. I did a little volunteer work with the Veterans Admin (Stephen is a gulf war vet) and even temped doing office work sometimes.
After 3 years in rainy 'ol Washington I have moved back to Yuba City with Steve so that he can go back to school. It really is a full circle, I am living in my sisters old house and substitute teaching in the district.
