Melissa's Story
SAHM to two lovelies... one boy of 11, Julian, and one girl of 7, Eva. Married for 12yrs to 'the boy next door'... except it's the one from my 20's NOT the parental house one (yes, I remember that you are the original "b-n-d" Mario...). Perpetual student. Live in Rogers Park on the North Side, right on the lake; wouldn't have it any other way! Been North since age 22. Did attend the 10yr reunion with my now husband.
Our kids attend CPS selective enrollment schools, much to my original shock and horror at the mere thought. Jules originally attended Waldorf for 2yrs but needed more academia; he decided to start fully reading at age 2, chapter books at 3. y Regional Gifted, and is equally as smart as her big bro, if differently so. Apparently, my kids are to be in the CPS "Options" programs for their tenure, just like mama. So, apparently on some level I still firmly believe in public education... even if our neighborhood school is abhorrent, and I was allowed to ditch typing 42 times at Emphi before someone called home! But, on the flip, Ms. Ackerman may have saved my life, literally and figuratively, so it was not ALL bad. That woman truly inspired excellence, and I miss her to this day! She literally may be the ONLY teacher to have inspired me to excellence... and it was with true fear and more importantly, INTEREST. I still have yet to enjoy a class more than I did hers. I can honestly say that.
