Merrill's Story
Life
I got married for the first time in 1984. I moved to San Francisco, and lived in the Bernal Heights neighborhood for a couple of years before getting married. Although it took some getting used to at first, I really loved living in the City. I lived in the City for 15 years (the duration of my relationship with my first husband, Barry Nichols). We never had any children. We got divorced in 1996, and I moved back to Santa Clara. I lived in Santa Clara for the next 9 years. I met Jeff (my current husband) while working at Castelle. He left Castelle in 2003, but we reconnected and started dating in 2005. He lived in Monterey county and it started to become difficult to maintain a long-distance relationship, so we moved in together (along with his daughter) in Sept 2005. On Sept 3, 2006, we got married. Being married again is rather unnerving for me. I have always been very independent and strong-minded, and yet with Jeff, I feel that I can let my guard down. That, in itself, makes me feel very vulnerable, because I don't let my guard down very easily.
Jeff had 2 small dogs, Scottie/Terrier mixes, and I had 2 Australian Cattle Dogs (Queensland Heelers). Jeff's daughter, Tiffany got a black Lab puppy, so now we ...Expand for more
have 5 dogs. If that wasn't enough chaos, I also had 2 black cats. In May, Tiffany found two tiny kittens under her car, and brought them home. So now we also have 4 cats.
We are currently living in Prunedale in northern Monterey County. Jeff works at Carmel Police Department in addition to being the Director of Communications at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. I'm working at a local law firm in the accounting department. I am also President of the Gold Coast Australian Cattle Dog Club, which serves Northern California.
We are both very busy, but enjoy being involved with each other's interests. I'm not much of a racing fan, but I will hang out at the race track with Jeff and his buddys. It is pretty much a testosterone festival, but that's OK. Jeff isn't that interested in dogs and dog training, but he accompanies me to the ACD club meetings with me, and watches with amusement from the shore of the estrogen ocean. I think that's the strength of our relationship, that we respect each other's divergent activities, and participate in them. We don't have to like all the same stuff all the time.
I feel as if I'm embarking on a new adventure. I don't know how it's going to turn out, but it's going to be a lot of fun.
