Merton's Story

Well, moving again... I've just accepted the position of Director of our National Air Training Center in Oklahoma City. Life has been a great ride thus far. I'll move from the Washington, DC area to OKC in January 2009. In my new position, I will be responsible for overseeing the administration of tactical law enforcement and aviation training to all DHS - CBP aviation personnel. I'm excited over this new challenge and looking forward to continued service of my country. My previous assignment was Director of Test, Training, Safety and Standards for the Department of Homeland Security - U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Washington, DC. I was responsible for oversight of our operational test and evaluation program where we tested all new aircraft and equipment prior to placing it into operational service, all training functions, the air and ground safety programs - to include accident investigations and the standardization of aviation procedures. Prior to this promotion, I managed a group of approximately 10 pilots at a field location in Florida. Our primary function is anti-terrorism, surveillance and counter drug missions. I've been able to visit alot of really unusual places in my line of work....I never would have dreamed of some of the things I have seen and been able to do - sure a long way from Plymouth. I'm based in Washington D.C. but travel all over the country and abroad in my work. Prior to my supervisory and management promotions, I served as a pilot, flying multi-engine airplanes and helicopters for DHS doing the same type missions I now supervise. Since high school, I've lived in Germany, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Alaska, Florida and now D.C. Before my federal civilian service, I was Chief Pilot for the North Carolina Marine Patrol...Expand for more
(1993 - 1998) and a Trooper/Pilot for the N.C. Highway Patrol (1986 - 1993). I was in the U.S. Army from July 1982 to July 1985. I enjoy school and have earned two Master's degrees and am currently in the process of completing a PhD. I completed a Master of Aeronautical Science degree with dual specializations in Aerospace/Aviation Management and Aerospace/Aviation Systems Safety in 2004. In 2007, I earned a diploma from the U.S. Naval War College's College of Naval Command and Staff and in 2008, I earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. My PhD will be in Business Administration with dual specializations in Homeland Security and Aerospace/Aviation Systems Safety.... Geez, I'm a geek! I rarely have the time to visit Plymouth but I still very much enjoy trips home. It always takes me back to a great time of my life. My only real regrets in life are not staying in touch with friends from school. I have always been bad about that. I'm sorry for not staying in touch with some of the best friends a man could ever wish for. Bruce Thomas was the closest thing I ever had to a brother... I hope you are well, my friend. John Brown and Kevin Bassett were true friends in Fischbach, Germany... John, saying "goodbye" was too painful - I'm sorry I didn't. Chuck Alford - you had my back... Wishing you the best, my friend. Donnie Grace and Andrew Aloise - miss you guys... I travel so much that when I'm home I just like to relax and forget about everything. Time just seems to slip by. Looking back I wish I had not been quite so shy. I always had a small group of close friends who I spent my time with. I hope all of you are living a wonderful life and have been prosperous beyond your wildest dreams. Mert
