Michael's Story

Life Following high school, I attended U.C. Davis and graduated with a degree in Economics and Political Science in 1982. I then moved down to Los Angeles and attended U.S.C. Law School and Graduate School of Business, where I received my J.D. and M.B.A. degrees in 1986. I passed the California bar in 1986 and began practicing law at various law firms in the Los Angeles area until I returned to Bakersfield in March, 1993. I have to admit I never thought I would return to Bakersfield, but did at my father's urging. He was convinced I would meet my bride in Bakersfield. He was right. I met Alice in 8/93 and we were married in 2/97 (Randy Rowles was my best man; I was his 8 months later). We have a lovely home in Stockdale Estates; have three children (daughter Paige born in 5/99, son Blair born in 7/00, and daughter Taber born in 9/07); and are owners of a boston terrier named Bruno. I am now a partner with the law firm of Borton Petrini, LLP, where I practice business (e.g. contracts, puttings deals together, business formation, etc.) and real estate (help developers entitle land and build homes) law. School Frank West Elementary School: 1965-1972. These were special times. I still have friends and acquaintances from this time in my life, including Pat Zuniga, Roy Sekine, Kathy Temple, Brian Parnell, Duane Keathley (I will update later if I miss some of you). Golden State Junior High: 1972-1974. These were often scary times. Too many fights amongst students for no reason at all. I think we were all finding ourselves. Amongst the friends I met at Golden State include Randy Rowles, who was a college roomate and the best man at my wedding. South High School:1974 to 1978. There were less fights in high school. People that started trouble in junior high either mellowed out or got kicked out. My best memories of high school were with the Young Life group started by Mr. McCraw (who is still a friend and served as one my groomsmen) and his regular substitute teacher wife Marti. I also cherish the April Fools Edition of the Rebel Yell in 1978 (we had a lot of fun on the newspaper staff; who could forget Robert Cook asking Ross Porter at Dodger Stadium whether he knew Ron Brown, our newspaper advisor). Most inspring teacher: Ron McCraw, Bill Miller, and Joe Slater (all English teachers for some reason). Biggest Crush: too many to list. Craziest Moment: the day they got Mr. Brisco's Fiat into the band room. College U.C. Davis: 1978-1982 (graduated with a bachelors degree in Economics and Political Science). I lived in the dorm my first year and apartments in my sophomore to senior years. Randy Rowles was a roomate during my junior and senior years. I was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. Although this fraternity was the least rowdiest, I was not a really good fraternity member because I did not drink alcohol and was not looking for one night stands. If beer and girls (one night stands I mean, not relationships) are not your thing, there are better ways to achieve male bonding, such as intermural sports. I did serve as Fraternity historian (they gave the nerds this job; never would I have made social director). My most significant involvement at U.C. Davis was as a member of College Life, the college division of ...Expand for more
First Baptist Church. I served two years as fraternity coordinator working to get bible studies started in frat houses (this may explain why I remained in the fraternity). During my senior year in college, I was accepted into USC, Pepperdine, and a few other law schools. I accepted the offer to attend USC law school. I enrolled in the fall of 1982 and began law school life at an apartment in Westwood. After the money quickly ran out after two months, and my car broke down several times, I almost had to leave law school. The USC Law School Dean of Student Life Larry Raful saved my law school career by getting me emergency loans and grants and got a space for me at the law school dorm. I owe my professional career to this man (who I believe was an agent of God's grace). The next Angel in my life was the Dean of Students for the Marshall School of Business, which was next to the law school. Although getting my MBA had been a dream, I could barely afford law school. This dean found a full scholarship for me, which enabled me to pick up my MBA as well. Workplace High School Employment: Dishwasher\Assistant Cook at Michael's Restaurant in the summer of 76; Stockboy at House of Fabric during my senior year (I had the opportunity to be the stockboy at Judys, surrounded by beautiful girls, but remained loyal to House of Fabric and recommended the Judy's job to Randy Rowles). College Summers: Millers Outpost at Valley Plaza during the summers after high school and before my sophomore year. Millers Outpost on Columbus before my junior year. Fastrip on Niles Street before my senior year. Waterbed Warehouse before law school. Law School\Business School: Law Clerk at the current Klein, DeNatale law firm before my second year. Law Clerk at Reinjohn, Clements & Burgess before from the beginning of my second year to law school graduation in 1986. Post Law School-- Please check my profile on linkedin.com for a full summary of my work history. In short, I worked at four different law firms in seven years of L.A. Law practice and one prior law firm in Bakersfield for five years. Since 1998, I have been an attorney at the current Borton Petrini, LLP, having made partner in 2001. I have also served as an adjunct professor at various local universities. Military The closest I ever got to the military was the day Randy Rowles, Pat Zuniga, Roy Sekine, and probably Don Cook and I went to the Post Office on Stockdale Highway and enrolled for selective service. I also briefly considered becoming a military lawyer because the military would have paid for my law school tuition and expenses. At the time, the idea of serving a 6 year committment before being discharged scared me. After all, I would have been 31 years old and an old man. Considering that the first seven years of my legal career was spent changing jobs every two years and trying to find my life mate, I could have found more stability in the military. Yet, had I joined the military, I would not have been able to meet or develop my friendship with two lifelong friends: Michael Flanagan and Michael Van Konynenberg. I enjoy seeing the posts of South High grads who have served in the military. If I had to live life again, I would strongly consider serving in the armed services.
