Michael's Story

Life Like many of my classmates I was born in United Hospital in Port Chester, New York. After living my first two years in Rye we moved to my childhood home at 49 Rose Ave in Harrison next door to my grandmother. My grandparents moved to Harrison from Brooklyn with my father in 1905. My early schooling was almost exclusively in Harrison, with a two year stint at Stepinac High School, finally graduating from Harrison High in 1958. With the encouragement of my homeroom teacher Mr. Bernard Auerbach I continued my education into higher learning. I married Pat Carino (Class of 1960) in 1961 and left Harrison for good to attend college, serve in the Navy, and find work. We've lived in Michigan, California, upstate New York, Massachusetts, Colorado, and New Mexico. I taught for Admiral Rickover in the Naval Nuclear Power School, was a radio physicist engaged in ionospheric research, and worked for NORAD as a radar data analyst and system engineer. We now live on 2 1/2 acres about 40 miles east of Albuquerque where at one time I raised llamas. Once we moved west it was where the family settled. I have three children living in Colorado and one in New Mexico. They have given us four grandchildren. My oldest child has a developmental disability and because of her needs I became a community activist in the late 1980's. Since activists are not in demand I retired early in 2002. Now Pat and I travel the country in our RV and indulge my passion for genealogy. In fact, we made two passes through Harrison in the past two years. When last visiting Harrison, Pat and I walked by my old house on Rose Ave, but to my dismay found that it was replaced by a large two story duplex manufactured house. They cut down many of the maple trees that lined the street. The same was true for other homes in the neighborhood. In the future I plan to continue my genealogy research into my Irish past and Pat’s Italian heritage. We hope to trav...Expand for more
el to Ireland and Italy to see the land of our ancestors. We also have a few more states in the northwest to visit in our RV. College In 1958, I attended Westchester Community College majoring in Electrical Technology and graduated with an A.A.S degree in 1960. Most of my schooling at WCC was at the Battle Hill campus in White Plains. At graduation, my instructors gave me an "Ohmie Award" for the highest grade point in Electrical Technology. It was made out of pipe cleaners and I’ve kept it all these years. Dean Reynolds encouraged me to continue my education. In 1960, I was accepted by several mid-west universities, but chose Michigan State University, in part because a former WCC grad highly recommended its electrical engineering program. It took an extra year and a summer to complete my studies because not all my courses at WCC transferred. I was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Honorary Society and graduated with highest honors in 1963 with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1967, following a four year stint in the Navy, I applied to Cornell University for graduate studies. I was accepted into a master's program within the electrical engineering department and received a National Science Foundation Traineeship. I studied under Professors Brice, Wagner and Farley. My focus was on radio physics and ionospheric studies and was given an office in the Space Sciences building. The summer of 1968 was spent at the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory in Puerto Rico where I developed my thesis topic on solar flares. I received my M.S. in Radio Physics in 1971 after going to work for Raytheon Company in Massachusetts. Much later in 1987, after several years of scientific and engineering work, I pursued a career change. I was accepted by Colorado College in an M.S. program for Math and Science Teachers. After two years I realized this was not for me and became a community organizer in support of disability issues.
