Michael's Story

Life I volunteered for the USArmy during my Senior year in high school, discovered JESUS just before graduation, enjoyed a wonderful summer with my then girlfriend whom I married a year later, and then went active duty. I spent four years in the USArmy Signal Corp, mostly in Heidelberg, Germany. During that time, my wife and I were blessed with our first son. I left the Army and went back home thinking my Army training could land me a good job. I spent the next year working multiple, non-career enhancing, odd jobs, just trying to survive. Thank God for families! My family that helped create me was helping the family God was helping me create, and my wife and I were blessed again this time with our second son. I rejoined the military and spent the next eleven years in the USNavy as an electronics technician. I spent tours of duty in Guam, Great Lakes, Illinois; Millington, Tennessee (where we were blessed with our third son) and where nobody can ever seem to get their fill of playing Softball (can you believe there is a LOT of Navy in TENNESSEE???); the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger homeported at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California; Port Hueneme, California; thirteen months of incredible duty at McMurdo Station, Williams Field, and Byrd Surface Camp, Antarctica (other than the separation from my family, Antarctica was incredible duty, as there is so little of anything down there, and yet, the beauty of what I saw, I just can't find the words to do justice of giving due credit to that spectacular part of God's world I miss SO much); Naval Submaring Base Bangor, Washington; and finally the Repair Ship USS Jason homeported at Naval Station San Diego, California; from where I eventually retired from the USNavy... I then moved my family up to Sa...Expand for more
lcha, Alaska which is just South of Eielson AFB, just SouthEast from Fairbanks. Alaska is SO beautiful! I finally had found a place I felt so at HOME! I spent nearly six years (as a civilian) working on a USAir Force Bombing Range. During that time however, the saddest part of my life occurred in that I lost my family. My beloved wife left and our sons went with her. It took me about the next four years to get my head together. It shouldn't have taken me that long. It was a valuable lesson learned, as I'll never waste that much time again wallowing in self-pity. That time can't be replaced! Shortly after my family left, I resigned from my job and traveled a LOT to see family and friends, and different parts of the world that interested me. I spent a lot of time doing volunteer work for my Church. Eventually, it was time to go back to work and get on with my life... I accepted a long-standing job offer from a friend who was working at Osan Air Base, South Korea. He hired me to work at a Korean Air Base Bombing Range working as a USAir Force contractor. After one year, I was hired by a USArmy contractor and worked in the Intellegence community for nearly a year at Camp Humphreys. I'm now working as a civilian for the USAir Force back at Osan Air Base as an electronics technician. Life isn't bad! I miss Alaska so much, but Korea has been very good to me! I love the people, their culture, their FOOD, and their hospitality! Life is good. So much for my long-winded story! I have some fond memories of friends from my past that I've cherished for a long time. It would be good to hear from all of you! Write me at oohay (I spelled it backwards), and my name is fighting (underscore sign) pirate. It will be good to hear from you! God Bless, and Cheers...
