Michael's Story
Life
After graduation, I ran off and joined the Air Force, where I spent the next 4 years "seeing the world." My job in the Air Force wasn't all they promised it would be, but there were some aspects that were pretty cool. I worked with electronics and communications equipment. If I tell you any more, they may come after me. While I was in the Air Force, I attended school at the University of Maryland in Europe, Chicago Community College and the Community College of the Air Force. I had a scholarship offer to go study geology, specifically volcanoes, in Greece, but the Air Force wouldn't allow me to take a leave of absence. I spent 2 years in Germany, back when there was still an East Germany. I got out of the Air Force in June 1990 in Nebraska.
In Nebraska I took several interesting jobs, including construction, farming and a meat packing plant. I finally found my calling with the Columbus Police Department as a Police Officer. I completely enjoyed going to work every day, but I missed the big city.
In 1992, I started working as an Officer with the Austin Police Department. I worked on patrol in Northeast Austin until 1997. In 1997 I transferred to work "Walking Beat" down on E6th St. I worked down there for about 4 years, until I decided it was time to move on. I spent about a year working as a "District Representative" in the downtown area, where I designed and built a Web Site for the residents and merchants to keep in touc...Expand for more
h with each other. While I had a lot more work to do as a District Rep, I didn't get to do it. In 2003, I promoted to corporal, and I went to an evening shift in Northeast Austin. In July 2008 I promoted to sergeant and took over supervising my shift. In December 2008, I was asked to return to the Downtown area to supervise a shift of officers in the 6th St area. I'm still enjoying my job, and I still look forward to going to work every day. I try to make the job as enjoyable for the guys who work for me as it was for me.
As far as family is concerned, I have 2 daughters and 2 sons. My oldest daughter is 17 years old and my youngest son is 5. I'm living out in the Leander area and I'm thinking about something even more rural next move. I've come to the conclusion that the city is fun to visit, but it's not fun to live there. I like the red neck corner store where you walk in and they know your name and they still have a Texas accent.
On my down time, I enjoy watching college football and sometime I enjoy the pro's, but they are nowhere near as fun. I like going for long drives out to nowhere in particular and I enjoy riding my motorcycle out to Burnet or Marble Falls just for a cup of coffee. I like a good beer or a good glass of wine, but I'm not to hot on liquer. I don't drink to get drunk and I can't remember the last time I did. I like to cook, but I'm not really all that good at it. I mess up more times than I get it right.
