Michael's Story
Life!
It's been an interesting 50(!) years journey (that long?!) since Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1966-1971). I don't get back to Ottawa often, and I understand that the school isn't there any more and the name is now used by some other school. Progress I guess?
Lots has happened. Went to Ottawa U and then Western after SWL. Met my wife-to-be on St. Pierre off the coast of Newfoundland, where we were both studying French. 45 years later, we are still married with 3 grown kids. My wife is a Grade 1 French Immersion teacher here in Hamilton and still loves it. My kids seem finally to be off the the 'revolving door' plan (but we're keeping the house and their rooms intact 'just in case'). If you have kids you'll know what I mean. One wonderful granddaughter (so far).
Some great jobs, some less great. After graduating from Western with my Master's, I worked in the provincial government for a Cabinet minister, then in the private sector in Toronto, and then up to Ottawa for the Feds. Really didn't enjoy working for the Feds - way too boring and no room for initiative.
Have been self-employed (...Expand for more
by choice) for the past 25+ years and still love it. Ministry. Marketing, Consulting. Started a training business a few years ago, which involves a lot of international travel, and I love it. Europe, USA, Caribbean, Middle East mostly.
Hobbies include regular travel (mostly Europe). I used to have a 28' sailboat that I rarely saw. We have spent a lot of time in Europe, including two months just travelling in France, and enjoy popping over for the occasional week in London, Paris, Budapest, Krakow, Brussels, you name it.
Went back to school in the 80's for theology and divinity. Got ordained as a Christian minister. My ministry today involves mostly performing 40-50 weddings a year, and Christian counselling, working mostly with recovering alcoholics.
Did I mention the heart attacks and the stroke? All the doctors said I should be dead. Sure glad I'm not - God must still have plans for me.
I have completely lost touch with everyone even remotely connected to SWL. Would be happy to reconnect - please feel free to email me at mbittle at newfocus.net or visit me at .MichaelBittle.com
