Michael's Story
Well, I haven't really been having much of an exciting life after graduating. Joined the Navy, which was a large step for me. I'm thinking nobody ever thought that I would have enough discipline in me to do such a thing as join the military. Either that or everybody expected it because they knew my father was in the Navy as well. Went to Chicago in Nov. '07 to begin basic training. January of '08 saw me leaving Chicago for Pensacola, FL to begin training in what would have been my field of work if I had not gotten injured. By July, I was packing my bags to go back to Chicago to begin schooling for what is now my line of work in Interior Communication (Electrical and Administration). Showed my face back home that December for Christmas, but was soon back in Chicago to finish up my schooling for the exact job I would have, Which was as a Network Administrator and Maintainer for a Fiber Optic Data Network onboard naval vessels. In March of '09, I finished the school and was off for Japan, where I have been on the USS Mustin (DDG 89) since. During the year of 2009, I saw such places as Dong Hae, So...Expand for more
uth Korea; Sydney, Australia; Brisbane, Australia; the Solomon Islands; and Guam. In 2010, we had a great opportunity to represent the U.S. in a joint naval operation in Malaysia. We spent 1 week working with the best of over 20 of the worlds naval forces. After that, it was off to Cambodia for a little R'n'R visit. Came back home for Christmas, but that was too short. 2011 was fairly eventful, due to the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear plant meltdown and equipment on board being damaged. We had to pull back into Japan early during one of our deployments due to some damage to one of the rudders. That year, we only went to Korea and other parts of Japan. In the late year, we did pull off going to Singapore (very expensive), Thailand, and Hong Kong. While we were in Thailand though, we were assisting with flooding relief, so not much time was spent out in town seeing the sights. 2012 has been an interesting year. We went up to Sapporo to see the world renowned Ice Festival. We have also been back to Malaysia and just left the Philippines. Who knows what the end of the year holds, as well as next year.
