Received my first bicycle for Christmas when I was 5. I got hit by a car on it New Year's Day one week later. We moved to a safer neighborhood that Summer with less through traffic. Still didn't stop me from pushing the envelope with risky but fun activities. Did the usual stuff like Cub Scouts and playing in the irrigation ditches, stealing cherries from the orchard at the end if the street. Somewhere along the line I developed an interest in things that went fast or flew. Spent a lot of time building and flying model airplanes with my buddy Dave McBride. My parents divorced in 1970 and we moved a few miles from my friends and support group. Still stayed in touch with a few but losing many of my childhood friends was not my choice. Special interest seem to attract like thinking friends and building fast cars was what I was doing when I was not at school. Wednesday nights at Fremont Drag Strip was a staple. After graduating high school I was working two jobs and when it came time to move out I purchased a small condo....Expand for more
It was 1975 in San Jose CA. I moved in with a sleeping bag and a lamp. I worked hard and I eventually settled into being on my own. I love cars and my first jobs and hobbies involved cars. I raced motorcycles first but soon realized the potential for serious injury was high so I moved to drag racing at Freemont Drag Strip and dirt track stocks at the San Jose Fairgrounds. A week's worth of repairs and tweeks for a few hours of fun at the track. I enjoyed it all. In the early 80's I got involved surfing. The big surfinn craze had been gone for 10 years but there was a revival going on, the second wave we called it. The waves were still the same, the boards were better, and the twang of the surf guitar rang sweet to my ears. I wasn't the drunken rebel as many were of that era. I remember the first wave I caught, feeling the water swell up from beneath me and pushing me along. A spiritual connection like no other that I had ever had. I love the 60's surf music and the Beach Party and Hot Rod movies of the time. They seemed to mirror a lot of what I was doing in life. Surfing, fast cars, drag racing, stock car racing, flying, skydiving, pretty girls and parties on the beach. I did have the chance to meet and become friends with Donna Loren of the Beach Party movies and her husband Jered Cargman of the Fantastic Baggys. The only things I didn't do was sing or play the guitar. Who I'd like to meet: All those who some how touched me in the growing years. The 60's and 70's were great times to grow up. I wish my kids could have been there.".
